Here's an ESPN link to the M's deal. http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/10089241/robinson-cano-agrees-deal-seattle-mariners
Wow, it's fast, strong proof that bringing back Jackie Z for an extra year was a huge mistake. He just mortgaged the future of the M's in an attempt to save his own job.
Apparently...... You are wrong. Just flat-out wrong. This is a ridiculous deal. The Mariners just put a giant albatross around their necks. Why did they do this?
Definitely. Bad signing for the Yankees. At least it's only 7 years. Ellsbury is a year younger than Cano as well. Cano is WAY more durable though
Like I said, for the near future it's great. If we can find one more average bat to protect Cano in the lineup, and get Price from TB (unlikely..) that would make it a formidable team. Felix/Price/Kuma as a 1,2,3 with at least a decent lineup (Cano, Seager isn't bad...) We'll see.
How is this "mortgaging the future"? He's done nothing other than set a 50M floor of salary for the next 6 years around Felix and Cano. The M's left 11M of salary room on the budget last year (84M paid vs. 95M budget) because no one would take their money. There's no salary cap. They've made a profit every single year save one for the last decade, have the national TV money starting this year and have their own RSN deal for about 30M a year starting up. Lincoln's told Jack Z that they could go up to 95M on the budget, and over if there's star power involved. I'd say Cano/Price? qualify. Put it this way: If this was for, say 10M a year, the M's would be ecstatic to get an All-Star hitter on his way to the HoF. Yeah, 14M more a year is an overpay. But who else is taking their money if Cano isn't on board? This is for recruiting as much as anything else. They couldn't get Fielder, Hamilton, Yu, etc., even throwing "overpay" money at them. When they said they'd match the Angels offer to Hamilton, he said he wanted to play in LA. As for "the overpay" aspect and the "bad contract" aspect, Pujols, Hamilton, Fielder would've all been the best hitter on the M's last year, even at their bloated contracts and long-term deals.
I wouldn't call it great, but it's not bad. But after 5 years....... it's going to be a killer. To pay that much for maybe 5 solid years....... It's like saying he's worth $35-40MM per season for 5 years, then the rest over the last five. I'd have rather seen the M's pay him $35 per for 5 years than $240 for 10.
Yanks have to be laughing at this one (and I despise the Yanks). It's the Cards-Pujols situation over again. That one big bat isn't likely going to be the difference in the end. If you're going to overpay, overpay for pitching.
They're going after Beltran as well, maybe they figured out they need to start putting butts in seats with the Seacocks and even Sounders being more popular than them.
If only hultzen wasn't out all year Btw there are some rumors about a walker and franklin swap for David Price. If we could lock him up long term then I would do it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
http://sportstwo.com/threads/252162-My-Cano-Reaction?p=3180728#post3180728 I really wish we had more active nba team boards on here, it makes it so much easier to read the butthurt.
lol can't blame them. they lost their best player to a team that plays in a city they can't even place on a map.
I don't buy that the M's will bump their payroll to the levels we've seen in the past, which means this deal will likely preclude other deals. I don't think it makes sense given where the M's roster is. Cano is the lipstick on the pig. Lol, I'd love to be wrong about that and see some of the M's prospects start to produce, but my usual optimistic outlook is starting to get pessimistic that they'll pan out. It's a historically huge contract and I don't have faith that his production will continue anywhere near where it has, playing in homer friendly Yankee Stadium. The fact that Pujols and Hamilton wouldve been better than any M's player says more about how bad the M's have been than anything else. Edit: Brian, for what it's worth, I'd love for you to be right and me to be wrong. I'm a Cubs fan first and it's been brutal watching both squads struggle in a similar way. Theo is sitting on cash and could make big splashes, but he's waiting for the young guys to develop and will throw down the money when the time is right. That makes more sense to me than what the M's are doing. That said, rumors are that Theo is about to spend big dollars to sign a Japanese pitcher, so maybe his approach is about to change.
