Are the Mavs full of ballhogs? Last season, the team averaged a total of 17.96 apg. Only the New York Knicks had fewer assists per contest. The highest apg total for the Mavs was Anthony Johnson's 4.3, but he only played 75 games with 26.4 minutes per game. So, do you guys agree? Mavericks is a team full of talented ball hogs, right? :shifty2: APG statsirk Nowitzki- 2.8Jason Terry- 3.8Josh Howard- 1.9Jerry Stackhouse- 2.9Devin Harris- 3.2Anthony Johnson- 4.3Austin Croshere- 1.2Greg Buckner- 1.7Devean George- 1.0 (he just joined, so he doesn't really count)Erick Dampier- 0.6DeSagana Diop- 0.3Didier Ilunga-Mbenga- 0.0
No.. They put more Isolation plays and diffrent types of plays than doing the pick and roll or anything like that.
Let me add to what Ballorma said. They use a ton of isolation plays. If anyone watches the Mavs, they would know that they aren't ballhogs. They find the weakness and matchup that they like in the defense and exploit that. They have great scorers at the point and shooting guard, and small and power foward spots. They use the pick and roll to get the prefered matchup and exploit it to thier advantage. This type of basketball is very great, it just doesn't get high totals of assists.

How embarrassing that he doesn't do that.Anyway, I don't really believe they are ballhogs; I just wanted to seek you Mavs' fans opinions about that matter. I understand that they play a different style of ball, so nobody should really expect someone on this team to average 10 or so assists per game.
Yeah this team doesn't have the greatest passers but they got great shooters (Terry and Dirk), great slashers (Harris and Howard), and a defensive prescence (Diop and Dampier). The only ball hog on this team I feel is Stackhouse and he comes off the bench. If he was making those shots I wouldn't consider him a ballhog.
Another thing you have to consider is that the centers aren't really even part of the offense. Usually they only get garbage points... dunks when they are wide open and so forth. They never really handle the ball.
There are a lot of things that can be considered here. Dirk is the main guy. You'd expect the team to receive insane apg whenever they pass the ball to Dirk and find him open. However, the Mavs don't work like that. They'll give the ball to Dirk, but he'll try to find a better range, even if he is wide open for a three. Dirk will move closer and take about two seconds or so, so the assist won't count. That's pretty much how I saw it in the NBA Finals.
Youre wrong. None of their players have good apg numbers because they thrive on iso's, not pass and shoot plays. Iso's wont get you apg numbers. They still have one of the best offenses in the League.

If you had read my entire post, I didn't claim that their style of play won't lead them to the Finals. I merely stated that the Mavs have the second lowest APG total as a team in the entire league, which is embarrassing because they're only one spot ahead of the New York Knicks.Anyway, as I stated before, the Mavs style of play has done miraculous things for them, such as leading them to the NBA Finals, so I don't see a problem with their "ballhog" ways.

They arent BALLHOGS. Okay, they dont average a ton of assists, but I believe shot attempts per game would be a more telling stat of who ballhogs are. Here is how many shots per game each player averaged last season. Note, these are stats from last season and players from last years roster. Dirk Nowitzki-19Jason Terry-13Josh Howard-12Devin Harris-7Adrian Griffin-4Erick Dampier-4Marquis Daniels-8Jerry Stackhouse-11Kieth Van Horn-7DeSagana Diop-2Darrell Armstrong-2DJ Mbenga-1Josh Powell-2Rawle Marshall-2Now lets look at the team that lead the league in assists, The Phoenix Suns and compare the two.Steve Nash-13Shawn Marion-17Boris Diaw-10Tim Thomas-10Raja Bell-12James JonesLeandro Barbosa-10Eddie House-10Kurt Thomas-7Pat Burke-3Brian Grant-3Dijon Thompson-1Nikoloz Tskitishvili-1They look quite equal to me. Its not like Dirk and Terry are shooting the ball 25 times a game. The assist stat is misleading in my opinion. You should look at shot attempts to see who the real ball hogs are. In any matter, Dallas plays winning basketball and thats all that really matters, no matter how they do it.
