The Chicago Bulls are strong frontrunners to sign point guard D.J. Augustin, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Augustin, who was waived by the Toronto Raptors on Monday, will clear waivers at 5 p.m. ET Wednesday and become a free agent.

The Bulls lost superstar point guard Derrick Rose for the season, and have been searching for further depth at the position with backup guard Mike James working his way back from a sprained knee. Shooting guard Jimmy Butler has been recovering from a foot injury and could return in the near future.

He should beat out Kirk. He has some offense, but he's tiny. Not really an alpha dog

The Bulls are cheap. Augustin just got cut from the worst team in the league (the Raps preferring two guys you've probably never heard of to him, Julyan Stone and Dwight Buycks). If you get anything at all from him it'll be a Christmas miracle.

His career has been up and down. I haven't followed him all that closely but he has had some minor injuries, nothing that would suggest such inconsistency other than You Can't Teach Tall Syndrome. What's the scoop?

Raps fans thought he might be a nice backup PG behind Lowry this season but his bad shooting and lack of size led to him falling behind journeymen in the rotation. Indiana's bench was bad during the playoffs last year and Augustin was one of those guys. I guess he looked alright on a go-nowhere Bobcats team but if you can't run up your numbers in that situation you probably shouldn't be in the NBA.

I loved how Augustin played on the Bobcats. Sometimes with point guards it seems like it's as much about system as it is about player. *cough* Jeremy Lin* I wouldn't be shocked if Augustin would be a stud if he signed with the Bulls. The Bulls seem to do very well with quick scoring point guards and cover for them on defense when they're on the smaller size. Players like John Lucas III and Nate Robinson have looked much better on the Bulls in the past then they do on other teams.

The Raptors are habitual losers. Happy to have Augustin aboard.

Clearly we need a pg! He has it in him to be better than any of the 3 we now have.

Our current PG has a PER under 10. Can DJ be much worse?

If PER has any significance outside of Hollinger and a tube of Astroglide I concur. Actually PER aside I agree with the sentiment.

There's nothing wrong with PER. It doesn't factor in defense, but even Kirk's defense is suspect at this point. We aren't exactly winning lots of games due to his play.

Nothing wrong with PER I guess. It is what it is. I find it is a good predictor of stars and busts -- but no better so than other analysis. To me its an overrated noisy metric that gets more credence than warranted. Nonetheless I agree that the team system is one in which a mighty might like DJ can thrive. In my opinion PER is particularly useless as a predictor of how a given player will sink or swim plugged into a new environment.

Under 10 is a low PER. Other "busts" include: Steve Nash, J.R. Smith, Jason Terry, Nick Collison, Steve Novak, Gerald Wallace, Shane Battier, John Salmons, Tayshaun Prince and Udonis Haslem. But dead last in the NBA in PER (among qualifiers) is our own Marquis Teague (-2.20). Way to go, Marquis!

Your list is all busts. Or washed up players, like Kirk.

    PER is perfect.

You can cite to it when it fits your argument and ignore it when it doesn't.

What could possibly be more useful?

Bulls beat writers about 1/2 hr ago all reporting he is now signed, so I guess he passed the physical. He is available for tonight's game
