Why I don’t pay for NBA insider.

Why so serious?

 

When I start charging people to read my stuff, I'll shorten my posts and stick with monosyllabic words. Promise.

 

I would like to give you a suggestion if you don't mind.

Break your posts up. It becomes more inviting to read, especially peeps on their phone.

You post quality shit, but if I'm not on my computer, I usually skim the first paragraph and respond. I know it's not very respectful, but try reading shit on your phone!

 

Quality shit - was that a pun? lol I suppose I can't change the attention span of fans, but it's a fair point. I'm a dinosaur I suppose because I still use a computer to type and read stuff on the internet.

It's okay when a person has time to read a column, which I think you are really good at. But remember we like immediate fast responses. I mean see how the game threads fly. If you have more to say, just break them up into multiple posts. It will be followed easier and I'm sure you would get more meaningful responses. Right now, I suspect you are getting around 10-20% responses to your 100% thread.

 

I wouldn't have responded if I was dismissive of your opinion. You characterization doesn't bother me though, because I can't force people to distinguish between hubris/ego/arrogance and humor/sarcasm - and explaining my jokes and sarcasm would make my post even longer. You may be onto something, because according to everyone in this thread, they loves long posts. More to a perceived persona, I'm a chick. And I've tried it the other way in hundreds of posts on other forums, and it just doesn't work. I don't expect you to understand, but it's just the way it is.

Isn't that what forums like oregonlive are for, to have a ton of one or two sentence posts? Or perhaps you can spend more time on twitter?

I hope posters like Blazers Fanatic don't follow your advice. I enjoy longer well thought out posts.

So who are your favorite NBA writers? Bloggers paid by the team?

I thought Amin wrote an interesting article and he had a lot of statistics I'd never seen before. Its a good perception of a possible future of the NBA. Do I disagree with him in many instances? Absolutely. Doesn't mean I can't learn something from him.

Some of us enjoy numbers and stats in sports. No they aren't the be all end all, just as numbers judging any professional aren't the be all end all, but it adds a dimension missed when viewing a team with my own eyes. Personally I'll ignore the contributions of players I dislike and overstate the positives of players I root for; but looking at stats can shatter those prejudices.

 

The first post of this thread was longer than all of my 30,000+ posts. Not nearly as much knowledge dropped, but it was a descent effort.

 

What makes O-live shit are most the posters and the nazi mods. The flow was cool back in the day.

First Ben "I only cover Blazer home games for a Blazer fan site" Golliver, and now Kevin "My statistical analysis is the only one you should follow" Pelton getting the wrath from Blazer Fanatic is awesome to see. I too have had some gripes with them in the past.

But in Pelton's defense, he is making a living off his own statistical analysis. That means he has to defend it and make it seem like it is top notch so people will pay to read it. But most times it is not right and this is why he annoys me. I used to follow him on twitter but I got annoyed with his overcompensation for him wanting to only rely on the stat he created and be too stubborn to admit when he is wrong. John Hollinger he is not. But at least he watches most NBA games, yet he is a little too obsessed with UW sports and talks about them a little too much for my liking.

My biggest pet peeve with sabermetric analysts are how they rely to much off of the box score and not watch the games. I was listening to a podcast last year and someone from Wages of Wins mentioned how he no longer watches games. He just does his analysis based off of box scores. That is crazy,and this is coming from a guy with a Master's degree in Statistics.

Right now, I think the best way to quantify on-court chemistry is looking at the +/- of a 5 person line-up. That stat has plenty of flaws and seems to only be used when a person wants to make a point that helps their argument but is ignored when it does not. That's why you need to watch the games and get a feel for things.

Getting back to Pelton, he is attempting to make preseason predictions using statistical analysis. This includes guessing a rookie's impact on their team. That is hard to do. But I am not getting paid to be a statistical expert, so I understand when someone like BF is calling them out for their poor analytical skills since they are labeled as an expert and are comparing themselves to Nate Silver (I never saw him say this but I will assume BF did and take her word).

Since ESPN is already a joke in their analysis of sports, I could never imagine paying extra for "expert" analysis. I know if you subscribe to their magazine you get free access to the insider stories. But for the one year I was getting the magazine ($5 for a year, how do you say no?), not once did I read any insider articles. I don't feel like I ever missed out on anything.

 

This is a good take, and not simply because I agree (you'll just have to take my word for it). I guess what pushed me to the point of writing about it was the overt sanitation Homer's Edge did on the Pelton article they ripped about Portland's ranking. The comment section was cleared of anything critical that didn't have an excuse to explain it away underneath it, and then the comment section was locked. Pathetic.

On a side note: It's always nice to know when you can be justifiably dismissive of supposed "experts" or even "know-it-alls" like Dave Decker. Portland out rebounded the #1 rebounding team in the NBA, and now rank 6th in the NBA in rebounding. Can't take anything good from pre-season. Red for fail.
