I could actually see them making a deal with the Lakers, using Lin, Asik and some bench player for Gasol and Blake

No chance, Gasol and Dwight hate each other.

Its kind of funny, heard Henry Abbott on an ESPN basketball podcast yesterday say the biggest need the Rockets had was a backup center. Terrance Jones and Montejunas have been solid at PF. He said they really just needed a guy like Asik to come in to give Dwight a break. Can Asik be the player they were hoping to acquire for Asik?

If Asik ends up eventually buying into the role that Houston team could be one of the best in the West.

I think the biggest issue with Asik is his contract will be up in two years. He wants that payday

Wow, I just learned that Houston didn't trade Asik today, the deadline. Very surprising.

    *self-imposed deadline.

Morey was shocked that he couldn't get young prospects and a 2014 first-rounder for a Przybilla tier center who is pouting.

Should have dealt him last summer. His value isn't going to get better.

Asik would start for most teams. Przybilla got a lot of rebounds because he played next to Aldridge.

It's funny to me that Asik was once thought of as one of the best Cs in the league, and we would be head-over-heels giddy to get him. And now that we have a capable C he's "Przybilla tier".
I haven't seen him enough to have an opinion, but I suspect his ability leans (if only slightly) more towards the Hibbert end of the spectrum than the Przybilla end.

Compare the advanced stats on Asik's last season with Przybilla's '09 season. Pretty darn similar, actually. Asik shot more, Przybilla shot better. Otherwise, about the same.

Sorry, defensive Cs can't be measured by points and rebounds. Gotta see him in action to know whether he really knows how to control the paint.

You and I both know that Przybilla absolutely controlled the paint defensively.

Anywhere else that you want to claim divergence?

As much as I loved Joel, Asik is definitely a step above. I'm adverse to Asik because of the 15m he's owed next year and because it would mean giving up Lopez most likely. To me that defeats the main purpose of bringing another quality big in in the first place - depth. I'd love me some Spencer Hawes though. I think Leonard could really help Philly with their tanking this year.

I don't know what you're trying to argue about. What divergence have I claimed? I've said that I don't have an opinion on Asik because I haven't seen him play...I just have a suspicion that people are selling him short.
But yes - Joel was good defensively. Better than Lopez. I think we'd be better if we had that sort of interior defense right now. With that said, I wonder how Joel would stack up against today's talent. When he played there was really only one C (unless I'm completely blanking) who had to be guarded. These days probably 1/3rd of teams have a capable C that demand attention.

I'm not adverse to Asik, but I'm not gung-ho on him either - mainly because I haven't seen him play enough.
Having a tandem of Asik/Lopez would be ideal, certainly. But if popular opinion of Asik, pre-Lopez, is to be believed then the idea of trading Lopez for Asik shouldn't be completely dismissed. Having someone who can protect the hoop and control the paint is exactly what this team needs. Before we got Lopez I got the impression that people thought Asik was just a step below Hibbert - and now he's practically bottom of the barrel!

The bottom of the barrel statement is because of attitude, just as any other talent that has attitude. Why do you suppose no one is giving Houston what they want? He's got the talent and capability. It's because he didn't handle himself well and has an albatross contract to boot!

Lopez and Freeland, combined for 48 minutes, get you Asik's production last year in 30.
