I'll start out with the obvious. Ben Wallace. Four seasons for $60 million may be considered as overpaid but in the Bulls' situation, they made the right move. I will admit Ben Wallace is getting up there in age and people are saying he's starting to lose his toughness. But if you think about it, what is free agency about? It's about putting in all your jewels on the best person you can. He fits perfectly with the bulls' defensive scheme. And he is a much bigger upgrade in the low post than Tyson Chandler. He is the body they needed for inside presence. I don't think they will get what they pay for in his 4th year on the Bulls but we will have to see as time goes. Before the season the Bulls basically were counting their game on future considerations. They've lost a few guys and have added some new ones while maintaining their sole core. The lineup at the start of the season will most likely be:PG: Kirk HinrichSG: Ben GordonSF: Andres NocioniPF: PJ BrownC: Ben WallaceHowever with the growing Tyrus Thomas and the declining PJ Brown, I expect Thomas to take over the 4 by the end of the season. Of course Skiles will also be changing Gordon, Hinrich, Duhon interchangibly for the lineup and also maybe through in the lockdown defender Thabo Sefolosha (who I might add the Bulls really needed because they lacked size in the guards). Looking back at last season, the offseason wasnt so hot. They signed Tyson Chandler to a 6 year- $60 million contract. Quite frankley, he did not live to their expectations. Ben Gordon did not improve dramatically from two season ago; Tim Thomas did not play one game in the bulls uniform despite being listed on their roster; and Sweeney played out of shape. On the otherside, Andres Nocioni broke out towards the end of the season, Chris Duhon improved on both ends of the court, and the Bulls gained more experience and team chemistry. Okay so on to what we can expect from this year. With such a defensive scheme, the Bulls should finish top 3 in defense and anything less is a disappointement. This comes especially because they drafted Tyrus and Thabo and added Ben (sounds clich? but its true). Ben Wallace should help them rebound more on the offensive end. Even with this additions they need to step up the defense even more because their offense has not improved too much. They lack post/inside presence scoring. The Bulls do not get many points from the point and Ben Wallace will not help the Bulls in scoring (he's got to have some weakness). Thomas, as flashy as he is, does not bring enough to make an impact on the offensive end. He is very explosive at times but I do not see consistency throughout the season where he leads the Bulls paint scoring. Victor Khryapa is not a scorer at all either and for Malik Allen, he shoots mid ranged shots and is scoring about 10ppg on solid nights. One thing that John Paxson really impressed me with this season is his ability to be active. Trading away Tyson Chandler, I believe, was good for both the Bulls organization and Tyson Chandler as well. New Orleans sees Chandler as the next Camby then so be it. But thats another matter. The significance of getting rid of Chandler was to clear up cap space next year so the Bulls can extend Kirk's and Nocioni's contracts as well as they should because a leader like Hinrich is hard to get and if the Bulls lost him then who knows when they will ever get a point guard that leads a team. In return for Chandler, they received PJ Brown and JR Smith. It makes no sense to me whatsoever to let go of JR Smith for nothing (howard eisley). He is 23 years old and he can score which is the one thing Chicago lacks the most. That is the one thing I question Paxson about this offseason. Overall, if the Bulls can rank decently in the 50%-75% of the league's scoring and they end up top 3 in defense I believe the Bulls will win 50+. My exact projection is 53-29. They have the talent and team chemistry. Now the question is how will it be used?(btw if this looks like crap its because I normally dont write too well, forgive me)
