I have been a Bear fan since the Bobby Douglas days and have seen the whole turnstile of QB's. I'm so tired of read posts from complete idiots on other boards saying how horrible he is and we would be better off with going McCown. Cutler (love him or hate him) is the best QB the Chicago Bears has had period. He is or shortly will be the Bears all time leading passer. Fact. I'm in search of other intelligent Bear Fans who want a great conversation. Please join in!
I like Cutler fine. I remember Bobby Douglas very well. Lefty QB who'd throw a screen pass at 300 MPH and break the receiver's hands. Ran for almost 1000 yards from the QB position in a 14 game season. They talked about moving him to TE or FB. The o line was so bad he was ideal - durable. And yeah, the Bears have had very few actually good QBs in their history and I agree Cutler is one of the better ones. I think the problem is he came in with very high expectations and he hasn't lived up to them. He's at the most visible position, the Bears have drafted a lot of offensive players around him, and traded for some very good others. This season, the Bears are 5-5 with him at QB. McCown hasn't won games either, but he has surprised (in a good way) with very good passing stats. His 109 QB rating is significantly better than Cutler's 88. I think he may be the 2nd best QB the Bears have had in my lifetime. McMahon was better, but his career was short.
Trestman's system helps McCown. He's a 34 year old journeyman QB and has really done well of late. He certainly has surprised a lot of people with his play. Douglas was something to see with his running. No one could catch those bullets he'd throw. Lol. McMahon just could never stay healthy, but was a tough son of a gun. I remember the Raiders game where the game was so physical that McMahon had a lacerated kidney.
That guy on the Packers deliberately injured McMahon. He had a hit list of Bears jersey #'s on his towel. Remember? McMahon as a rookie could walk up to the line and read the defense like a veteran star QB. Watching any highlights of the 85 bears season and all you see are long bombs that are perfect spirals (Willie Gault!). But seriously, who have the Bears had at QB? Chris Chandelier? Sid Luckman? Actually, Harbaugh and Tomczak were excellent as reserves for McMahon and then went on to become starters. Jim Miller wasn't too bad. Vince Evans? He used to return kicks, too Anyhow, I think we stole Cutler in the trade we gave up Orton.
