I have only really started looking deep into such things since joining this forum. But I have always wondered what it is really for? My thoughts are that is for getting lineups right? Is that correct? And when a player gets 20 in 20mins does it really mean anything? or is it like the all star game?
I think its for conditioning and young players. Preseason helps alotve players, including stars, get in better shape for season. Running up and down, shooting, playing against a different defense. And for the young players to just get a little action, see how rookies work in system, that type of thing.
It doesn't mean a whole lot. It's used to see how young players are going to do (as said before), figure out starting lineups, final rosters, etc. They're just ironing things out before the season starts. They probably also use it to get players used to a particular defensive/offensive scheme, working with teammates, blah blah.
It's for conditioning and getting back to playing games. Also used for getting the line-ups set, seeing how some players play together, stuff like that. You can't really put too much stock on how someone does in the preseason but sometimes you can tell how a team will do during the season.
I think preseason is just to get teams ready for the upcoming season. Get the players on the right page and out there experiencing some games to get back into basketball form. Also, for training camp invitees to show their worth at making some rosters. Sort of like right now with the Mavericks, it creates battles for certain spots like Dampier/Diop. Dampier so far is supposedly ahead of Diop and could start come opening day. And players like Ebi/Barea/Carroll/Washington competing to snag the last spot.
A lot of teams use pre-season to finish filling out their rosters. thats why you see a bunch of scrubs getting 20-30 minutes sometimes. most teams already know what their main 7-8 guys can do, they just want to find that needle in a haystack player which will eventually become productive.
Preseason is so Coaches know how to assemble lineups, to show how they play together... and experiment
I think the preseason is to help young players get prepared for the NBA games. They have to know what they can and can't do. A player can't try to hold the ball the entire game and shoot before the shot clock goes off just so that they can score, you know? A player can't let off 100 shots and think that since gravity is real, at least 50 of the shots should go in, so the player will score 100 points.Anyway, I also think the preseason is for coaches and team staffs to see who is actually worthy of receiving minutes.BTW, anybody see Damien Wilkins dunk on Brian Cook?
it's different for different teams, for the good ones it's there for a little conditioning of the regs, and to see if you can find some diamond in the rough....for the bad teams it's to get some wins that they won't be getting in the regular season lol
Preseason - A useless attempt at warming NBA players up, even though none of them are trying whatsoever

It can be used for a variety of things...in the Pistons case, we're using the Pre-season to get Nazr situated as much as possible with the starters, and to see how the bench is going to play together. I like it since I get to see the younger guys play...thats always interesting to see.

If you watched any of the preseason games, you would notice those guys trying very hard. Its just a basketball instinct.

However, the preseason does bode well for younger players fighting to make the squad. There
a lot of the players that are on the fringe are trying their hardest to earn a spot on the team or other guys are trying to show they can play and earn a spot in the rotation. I think most of the players that already get a lot of playing time dont really try their hardest and just try to get the younger players involved in the games
