I sensed this was coming, so who do you think will replace him? Wilcox perhaps?

nah yours beat me by seconds :p I'll merge into yours.

Over at Duckterritory someone posted a rumor that Wilcox will get announced to USC after their bowl game tonight.

Not sure at this point, as most likely candidate seems taken.

I think this hire for us should be surgical cause in my opinion this is the key spot to getting us to the national championship and winning it!

    defninitely an important decision.

My guess would be on promoting Neal to DC if he wants it.

I wonder if Tony Dungy is interested in getting back into coaching. That'd be cool to have him as our defensive coordinator! He could take over as head coach if Mark can't hack it.

Of course, the knuckleheads will say he was forced out by Phil or that Wilcox will take over... That said, I am very surprised by this.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti will retire after the Ducks' Dec. 30 Alamo Bowl matchup with Texas, the school announced Friday, ending a career at the school he started coaching at in 1978, as a graduate assistant.

Aliotti's retirement was first reported by CBS Sports, and later confirmed by a source before the football program's Twitter account announced that Aliotti would indeed retire.

He has been Oregon's defensive coordinator for 17 seasons, and was a staff member for seven more, notably leading Oregon's "Gang Green" defense during the 1994 Rose Bowl run and a unit in 2010 that allowed just 243 points -- a program record for a 13-game season -- during UO's BCS national championship game season.

In a release from the university, Aliotti said: “I’ve coached in a lot of great games in my life but the things I’m going to miss the most are the great players and assistant coaches I have had a privilege to work with. There is never an ideal time to announce these decisions because I don’t want to take away from the attention on this final game or the focus from the players who are the ones who deserve all the credit for getting us to where we are today.

“I’ve been fortunate to enjoy a great career and to step away from the game when I felt the time was right. Now is that time.”

Aliotti was Oregon's highest-paid assistant in 2013, earning $370,000, $50,000 more than offensive line coach Steve Greatwood. Among FBS programs this season, the Oregon defense ranked 79th in third-down conversion defense, 37th in passing yards allowed, 46th in red-zone defense and allowed 21.6 points per game, 25th-best in the nation and third-best in the Pac-12.

“Nick’s contributions to the football program at the University of Oregon cannot be overstated,” Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said in a UO release. “His dedication to the success of this program will certainly leave a lasting impression that is hard to measure. I want to thank him for his loyalty and efforts to help make Oregon football what it is today, and wish him and his wife, Kathy, a long and happy retirement.”

Aliotti will speak at a news conference at 12:30 p.m. Pacific with Oregon defenders.

My hope is that rather than our 'bend but don't break' defense we adopt something more aggressive and really get after people.
