They're obviously overrated by some, and underrated by others. Sometimes they do good, sometimes they do bad.

I would say that a good deal of posters here do overrate their defense though. Batum gets wrecked by stronger players, and Matthews can't keep up with fast ones.

Are they overrated by Blazers fans? Sure, probably. Are they highly rated by neutral observers? Sometimes, maybe?

Overall, I'd say that Matthews is an effort guy with limited physical attributes, but is slightly above average as a wing defender and Nic has great physical gifts, but doesn't apply them consistently and is closer to average ... but performs worse than his physical gifts suggest he could (for whatever reason).

perhaps, but he is a troll (never says anything but negative shit about the Blazers) and he has been banned before. If he said all the negative things he says, but also pointed out positives now and again, I would be fine with him. But as it stands now, he is a huge detraction from this board. I think you mods are wrong to allow banned people to return with new names, but whatever. This thread is a decent discussion point, but would be much better coming from just about anyone else.

 

Wes is fairly solid at defense; mostly due to his effort.

Conversely, Batum is at best average due mainly to his lackadaisical attention, and also in part to his sporadic effort.
He shows spurts of elite defense, especially on smaller opponents, but at other times looks like he's not in the game or disinterested.
He looked completely lost on a few plays against the Heat.

The same could be said for Aldridge for that matter.

Batum is WAY overrated (on average) by the typical fan.

One constant with Wes = He will always try hard and he is absolutely doing his best, no matter what. He has lateral limitations that slow him while Batum is just a pussy and quits on D half the time and tries to get cute and block shots letting people blow past him. I think there is a reason we have Wes on LeBron a decent amount given the substantial size difference.

That said, Batum has the higher ceiling as a defender - although, I'm not sure he'll ever reach it at his current work rate.

 

Not going to overreact to Portland finally losing one of those close games just because a chance to beat the LeBron-less Heat was squandered. The Blazers' slippage to No. 22 in defensive efficiency, by contrast, is fair game for dissection, because their D is where doubters get their fuel.

Wes somehow has a rep as being a good defender, but he's really not. He's a good post defender for a SG, which is nice, but he's kinda slow on the perimeter, doesn't have the long arms that make some guards good defenders. Batum does well in spurts, but can get blown by as well.

You don't know what your talking about on this one... Wesley is 6'5" and has a 6' 8.25" Wingspan. Now it's not nearly as long as Batum's but to say he doesn't have long arms is just false.

Yes, especially with all the PG sized guys such as Dragic, Eric Gordon, Derrick Rose, Lou Williams, OJ Mayo, Randy Foye, Wade playing at the two guard.

Wesley isn't an elite defending SG but its not because of length.
