...and carpentry, and drywalling, and floor tiling/carpet laying and fence building and landscaping and LOTS of other Prevailing Wage Rate jobs that are meant to help give legal US citizens a family-wage job on large public works projects. So, we all pay higher prices for public construction work, with a lot of the 'extra' wages going to illegals. Yay. The California Supreme Court granted a law license on Thursday to a man living in the United States illegally who graduated from law school and passed the state bar exam. The decision means Sergio Garcia can begin practicing law despite his immigration status. Garcia had challenged a 1996 federal law that bars people living in the country illegally from receiving professional licenses from government agencies or with the use of public funds, unless state lawmakers vote otherwise. Shortly after the court heard arguments in the case, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a state law that authorized the granting of the license. The new law went into effect Jan. 1. Garcia arrived in the U.S. illegally 20 years ago to pick almonds with his father and worked at a grocery store and in the fields while attending school. The case has pitted the Obama administration, which opposes licensing Garcia, against state officials who have supported him.
Immigration status aside . . . we put basketball players on pedestals for their god gifted talent. Sergio came to this country probably not speaking a word of english, doing seasonal farming work and working in a grocery store . . . and manged to get himself into and graduate from law school and pass the bar exam. In any other world people would tip their hat to a guy like this. In US, we bow to Lebron and say Sergio is a problem in our society and an injustice to American citizens.
My reading of the article is that he was initially going to be denied, but the state legislature passed a law allowing him to become a lawyer and governor moonbeam signed it. So the laws conflict. Those of you who are so stuck on the law being upheld might consider the new law was.
I just read an SJ Mercury News article with more details. The guy has been waiting for his green card to be approved for ten years, or more. There are green card rules for illegal immigrants to become legit, and additional rules for children of illegals.
