The title of the article itself is awesome... Why zombie apocalypse should help Biggio's case for Cooperstown http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/why-zombie-apocalypse-should-help-biggio-s-case-for-cooperstown-010214 That link then talks about this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FWF-e9lG_U4
...I'd like to think that Biggio gets in this year...then again, I thought the same thing last year...so who knows.
3000 has been the benchmark, and he's a card caring member. What always impressed me about Biggio is how he did the Posada thing in reverse by going from catcher to 2B. Gammons was on MLB and they were talking about HOF voting. Now I realize that it's Gammons, but he brought up a good point. He basically said that there should be no self imposed number that gets in. If 8 guys are worthy then don't penalize the player. PS, 59 wants his snacks....Just word on the street Rick!!!!
...I think he would, rick. He was a very good all around player for a very long time...played nearly every day and played 3 different positions and played them all quite well. I know that 3000 is just a number but the fact remains that every player who amassed 3000 hits has been admitted to the HOF, with the exception of Rose and Palmeiro. (for obvious reasons) ...now gimme my damn snacks !
Oh don't get me wrong, he was a real hard nose player & a model of consistency. Not to mention his transition to other positions. BUT.... only Cal Ripkin (276) & Ricky Henderson (279) had a lower batting average among players with 3000+ hits. And only Dave Winfield had as few 300 BA seasons (4). Personally I'd like to see him get in just for the way he played the game, I'm just saying without the 3000 hits its possible as a 281 hitter he doesn't get in. And as far as the snacks the vendors are on strike but if you're still interested I do make a mean goat testicle casserole. I'll let you know when the vendors are back to work & I'll even supply some chicken sperm dip. UMMM tasty.
If we go by the numbers - Biggio is a Hall of Famer, and I think he is. Over 3,000 hits along with a very good career BA (.281) 414 Career SB Only Tris Speaker, Pete Rose, Stan Musial and Ty Cobb have more doubles. ...and for good measure, he hit almost 300 HRS with close to 1200 RBI.... Perspective - Biggio managed to hit at least 20 HRs in a season 8 times (the same as Carlton Fisk, but Fisk did have one 37 HR season along with 1330 career RBI). Biggio .796 OPS -- Fisk .797 Yep, Hall of Famer.
look at the positions though... Fisk was a catcher... Biggio was not a catcher... so they are a little different
Biggio played catcher, 2b, O.F./ LF and CF....and if he had played all of his games at any ONE of those positions, I still think he's a Hall of Famer.
