I'm posting this more out of curiosity then anything else. Maybe just to assure myself that I'm not an aging close minded critical old fart. Okay here it is......

Does anyone else share my views on the ignorance of what is referred to as REALITY television. Making no talent clowns into millionaires. Like the Kardashians, the jerks from Jersey shores & all the housewives of WHERE EVER!

I have come to the conclusion that they (tv honcho's) have pretty much covered every topic in creating these brain dead shows. There are one or two of these that I enjoy like the storage wars & shipping wars but for the most part I think most of them are just ridiculous. Give me the history channel anytime at least I actually learn something. Personally, I watch TV to get away from reality.

Okay fire away, what do you guys think?

I have said for many a year with a few programs excepted TV is pretty much a vast wasteland. No talent clowns they may be but they are laughing all the way to the bank. Somewhere out there these people are drawing ratings and support that leads to their "success" I remember once hearing a female kick boxer saying she'd kick Kim Kardashins a@@ if she ever ran across her. Now that would be some reality TV I'd watch.

And to think Kim Kardashian's claim to fame like Paris Hilton is from making a sex tape. And lets not forget the little no talent fat bitch Snooki from that jersey show. Made famous for being a sloppy falling down drunk.

Reality shows are very cheap to produce. It seems like every cable channel has a few. Even bottom of the barrel channels like Tru TV have a roster of reality shows. The good thing is these shows along with uninspired network comedies and procedurals are easy to ignore.

On the other hand scripted television on premium cable channels has never been this good. The Sopranos has spawned a generation of excellent television. Pretty easy to come up with a list of ten or twenty very good shows from the last few years. Premium cable has become a bastion for writers perhaps even more than film.

Used to be ones private matters stayed behind closed doors and that is the way it should be. One would be embarrassed if they were taped or filmed in the "act". I understand that now certain people have this done, pretend to be mad, then cut a deal which makes them very rich thanks again to the morons who buy the DVDs. I remember seeing part of a movie where a group of young kids were roaming Hollywood ripping off Celebrities houses. Believe they got Orlando Bloom and Lindsey Lohan among others for millions. The one part that cracked me up was that Paris Hilton was targeted because they deemed her stupid. In her house they found 8 K in cash under a bed, Paris Hilton, another one of my "favorites.

And its amazing how CBS has pretty much a monopoly on all the most popular shows. From N.C.I.S. Person of interest, Criminal minds, C.S.I. Elementary, Blue Bloods, Hawaii 5-0, & comedies like the big bang theory, 2 1/2 men, 2 broke girls, Mike & Molly etc, etc,. I'll tell you if I'm heading ABC or NBC I'm firing someone's ass.

I think you're talking about The Bling Ring.

Sofia Coppola (dir.) criticising Paris Hilton for nepotism is just a bit ironic.

You may be right about the networks. I've never seen any of those shows TBH. I was mostly referring to shows on HBO, Showtime, FX, AMC, etc.

...I don't watch any "reality" shows...because, well, there's very little reality to them.

As soon as someone knows they are on camera I think reality pretty much goes out the window.

VICE has a channel on YouTube that has alternative documentaries that are quite good if anyone is looking for something closer to real life.

There are quite a few reality shows I actually enjoy... Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs, Gator Boys, Call of the Wildman, Cake Boss, and the Next Great Baker are a few... but no longer a fan of Survivor or things like that...

You had me up until the last two baking shows. But being a married man I'll blame your feminine lean on your wife. BTW: I hope she's feeling better.

I have to admit I do like watching Cake Boss and have been to both of their NJ locations. As far as reality TV goes, I do enjoy watching Amazing Race, Big Brother and Survivor.

CBS definitely has the top programming with the shows you mentioned before.
What sucks is how fast programs get pulled off the air because they aren't mega hits right away. Shows like Terra Nova, Jericho, Life on Mars, V and Eli Stone just to name a few that didn't last.

production costs and casting is the major reason for the explosion of reality shows. As successful as shows like Cheers and Friends put pressure on networks to pay their salary demands, networks decided to say enough is enough we will bring cheap television to the airwaves and people loved it...

Does anyone else think there's ALOT of cop shows on TV?
It seems as if every time I change a channel - I see a group of police armed with huge guns kicking down a door with their badges dangling from their necks.

There seems to be another new fad within these shows.....pretty, 20 something year old woman hard charging right along with all the super macho dudes. Yep, we see it often in the real world..... lmao

Just like the 53% of woman Marines who can't do at least 3 pull-ups. lol
