J.R. Smith reached down and untied Shawn Marion’s left shoe during the second quarter of New York’s 92-80 road victory in Dallas on Sunday.

With a little more than two minutes remaining in the second quarter and New York leading 48-33, Dirk Nowitzki stepped to the foul line for his second free throw. Smith, who had just checked into the game, lined up alongside Marion, occupying the third stall on the right side of the paint.

As Nowitzki went into his free throw routine, Smith bent down as if to check his shoes before reaching over to untie the laces on Marion’s left shoe. Marion looked down, apparently catching Smith in the act, but by that point it was time to jockey for rebounding position and there was nothing he could do. Nowitzki buried the free throw, though, turning Smith’s into a bit of pointless mischief.

J.R. Smith is such a tool. That's a good way to get someone hurt!

I would have T'd him up for that. That is an unsporting foul and he deserved a Tech. How does the ref not catch that? You are supposed to be looking at feet when you administer free throws.

I don't think there was risk of injury. It was a prank.

It's unsportsmanlike. That "prank" could result in an injury. It's the referee's number 1 job to keep the players safe. That is not basketball it's buffoonery.

Hopefully we get to find out how much that "prank" costs him.

Whatever charity the NBA has is thankful Mr Smith is such a fucking tool

    Another thought

Has there ever been a JR who wasn't a complete tool?

All I can think of is Rider, Smith and Ewing

Not "pointless mischief". Tripping on a shoe lace or injuring an unsupported foot isn't that funny. Definitely deserved a tech, and now a fine.

    J. R. Kidd? Smith should have spilled a cup of beer on the front of Marion's shorts to make him play badly from embarrassment.

Same as a Formula One racer rigging his opponent's brakes to fail. Could have easily resulted in a career- ending injury at worst, or an easy score due to the distraction which is what happened.

I'd suspend him for 1 year.

This wasn’t as egregious or ostentatious as Kidd’s soda-spilling stunt but there is an unsportsmanlike element to Smith’s action. Although the injury risk is minimal, it’s easy to see something like this drawing a technical foul if an official had seen it unfold. Longtime NBA writer Howard Beck suggested on Twitter that Smith could face a fine from the league office, and while that might seem heavy-handed at first, there is some slippery slope potential here, and Smith’s repeated sanctions for other on-court and off-court incidents put him in a unique position punishment-wise.

If he'd had more time maybe he could have tied his laces together. Now that would have been comedic gold.

Or brought out a box of matches and given him a hot foot.

Next he could pour some horse liniment down his pants. That should distract him for a bit.

There's a lot of potential for injury here. In addition to tripping over a loose shoelace, the shoe could easily come off, putting Marion and others at risk of injury. Think what could happen if there is a loose shoe on the curt and somebody comes down on it and rolls an ankle or injures a knee. It was a punk move by a punk-ass player. I doubt if Smith was intending to hurt anyone, probably trying to be funny, but he needs to understand the potential risk so he doesn't do something stupid like this (I'm confident he will do plenty of other non-related stupid things) again. Stupid is as stupid does.

If shoe size is any indication, it was probably motivated by penis envy...

Can you name a time where a lost shoe or untied lace has caused an injury?

Not off the top of my head, but I also can't name another time when a player deliberately untied an opponent's shoe. Just because it hasn't happened doesn't mean it can't. Any type a debris on the court presents a risk.

I can. I got a nasty bruise on my knee when someone stepped on my shoelace during a city league game and I fell.

And aside from the evidence already brought forth, some smart guy once said something along the lines of "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence".
