I don't know if Winnipeg will be buyers or sellers, but it seems like they need a goalie. Pavelec has not been good, and their backup is Montoya. Might they be interested in Talbot plus for Byfuglien. Article somewhere said they might need to get as much as they can get for him and move him. I think he's around 28, big, tough, tons of heart, skill, and a big part of a cup winner. That's the type of player we need. I'm not trading anymore #1 picks, but what about something like Talbot, MDZ or Moore, maybe Miller or some close to ready prospect(Fast,Kristo). I would think they would only want younger players so that would leave out Girardi. Would you do that? Too much? Dump, you're the prospect expert. Talbot, MDZ or Moore, and what prospect might get that done in your opinion? Would be interested in what you think.
I'm a huge Buff fan and he'd absolutely be an asset. Big guy who plays physical and has alot of offense to his game. Definitely cant hurt. But just playing devils advocate, he is not a great skater and is caught out of position ALOT. Yeah that's what you get with an offensive Dman, but with the way the D is playing already can we really afford to have another guy back there prone to giving up odd man rushes? He might not be a great fit for AV's style. A guy who is going to be pinching alot needs to be smart and have some skating ability to get back in this system. I'm still of the thought that this team needs another scorer before it needs a Dman. Would WPG take a Talbot and DZ+ package for Kane? Do we even want Kane anymore? He's still signed for awhile and would allow us to concentrate our FA efforts on other parts.
Buff fills a HUGE need IMO. He isnt great defensively but he is good enough and his shot is BOOMING and he plays PHYSICAL. Winnepeg goalies are horrible. Pavelic has had an awful year
Buff is on my fantasy team and this player alert was just added today. Interesting timing considering this thread and some good points here. Sidenote: Buff is a fucking awesome fantasy player Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press believes the Jets should trade Dustin Byfuglien. Advice: Lawless states that the risks outweigh the reward when it comes to the play of Byfuglien and it's easy to see why, looking at his statistics. He is tied for second on the club with 32 points (nine goals, 23 assists) in 45 games, but he also has a team-worst minus-14 rating and he's second in the NHL in giveaways with 55. Byfuglien often struggles with consistency, which isn't something Winnipeg wants to see from a player who averages 26:08 of ice time per game, which is the most on the team. It will be interesting if the Jets view Byfuglien the same and look to move him.
Great offensive ability. But we absolutely murder DZ and Girardi on here for bonehead plays with the puck...how long will the league's second leading giveaway machine last before we start the bench Byfuglien threads?
Byfuglien doesn't fit AV's system. He's too slow. I don't see it as a match. I don't think we can trade Talbot until the off-season or deadline if the Rangers feel they won't make the playoffs. He's been too important so far. I'd love them to add King and possibly Forbort from the Kings for MDZ instead. Forbort has a lot of upside and King is the type of big, tough, role player we need. He has some hands and can stand in front of the net. If they did go after Buyfuglien I would never use him on defense other than the PP at the point. I would use him at forward. I don't see him as a fit for the way we are drafting all based on speed.
Boston is f'n kidding themselves if they think they can win the cup with that defense with Seidendope gone for the season. They better wake up. That Ducks game last night was a wake up call for them. They need to put together a huge offer for Girardi and see if the Rangers will do it.
There will be an incredible bidding war for Girardi at the trade deadline. I heard Anaheim is trying to get him earlier than that but most likely they are offering crap.
62, I think you are overpaying by a lot. If the Jets really believe Talbot is legit, you might not have to offer anything more than Cam straight up for Byfuglien. Cam is signed through next season for a measly 575,000. That's a freakin steal. Byfuglien has a bad cap hit at over 5 for another 2 years. Plus, our PP is really good now. We really don't need him to improve it. IMO, a starting goalie is worth a lot more than a Byfuglien. If the Jets believe Cam is a starter, then they have to pay that value. Offering up what you did is crazy. Makes no sense to offer up so much for a player that bad defensively. You have to ask yourself. Jets have had Byfuglien for years, and they stink every season. If he was truly top defenseman, the Jets would be better. He's a forward playing defense which makes little sense for us to add because our defenseman have been morons most of this season. We don't need another moron.
Thanks Dump and others. I didn't realize Buff was such a defensive liability. My initial thought was for Kane, but I thought he was gaining reputation as moody and sometimes lazy. I've had enough of those types and thought about Buff after reading he might be on the block. We need both top offensive talent and bigger, tougher players who can play. It doesn't matter to me which comes first. Cam could possibly be a big piece for a team in need of a goalie. I just don't know much his value is after so few games. Thanks for the responses.
I really dont get this board half the time. Buff is not a complete player, far from it. He is not great defensively although I think he is adequate. Check out the goalie stats for Winnipeg. They are awful. Save percentage especially. Pavelic has been terrible. I dont see many Dmen who are going to be "+" players on that team with those goalies. Guess what, players that are complete players are really never available thru trade except for special circumstances. For years people have been asking for a Dman with a great shot who plays physical. Guess what that is Buff. He also sticks up for teammates and I think with our D and Hank when he gets out of his funk would be a VERY good fit. Dump brings up a good point about the PP being way better now with AV but I still think its a big need on this team and I would push to get him. $5.2m is not a horrible cap hit for a guy who is 28 and is basically a 15-20 goal/50 pt guy on the back end Guess what, if he was a lockdown Dman and a 50 pt guy he would NOT be available and he would be making Shea Weber money
Good points Dis. It's hard to get that complete player. I guess part of it is that we as fans really don't get to see players on other teams on a nightly basis. If we did, some opinions would probably change. His good points you mention are things this team desperately need. For me, it comes down to what it would cost to get him. I was really throwing it out there to see what others would be willing to give up. I would think DZ's value has dropped since the beginning of the year and he is being shopped. Talbot, as good as he's looked, has played what, 10-15 games as an NHL goalie. I doubt that would be enough to get him. Other teams, closer to a cup run, would probably offer more. Would it be worth it for us, considering you'd no longer have those assets for a different deal? I'm not sure.
Like I said 62, I'm a big Buff fan and he has alot of positives but I think front end scoring is a much bigger need right now and I'd try to hold on to our assets for that.
Respectfully Prod, not necessarily disagreeing or trying to argue, but if there is more than one glaring weakness, why does one have to be dealt with first? We need a few of both types. I would think the best deal we could get would be the way to go.
Right now it seems like the value of our players are nothing because teams know Sather wants to make a deal, the value of other players are a ton because they know GM's like Sather want to make a deal.
I just don't see this team as having many attractive trade pieces to use, whether at the pro level or on the farm. A guy like Buff with his offensive production is going to be costly. I'm of the opinion that front end scoring is a much greater need than dman right now, so I'd rather see Sather concentrate his efforts and trade chips there. Buff brings a big shot, PP ability, and physicality. The PP is already clicking as dump said, and hopefully McIlrath is ready real soon for the physicality. So I'm not sure I give away the big pieces necessary just for his big shot, when scoring from the top 6 is the much greater need in my humble opinion.
