Now, here's a true example. My friend became a Shaquille O' Neal fan back in 2000, after the Lakers won their first championship with the Shaq-Kobe combo. When Shaq left for Miami, my friend switched over to the Miami Heats as his favorite team. I criticized him for being a traitor, but he replied, "I'd be more of a traitor if I let my favorite player escape my attention.." Okay, maybe he didn't say that exactly and maybe we got into a fist fight because he cracked 'yo momma' jokes, but still...The point/question is:Hypothetically speaking, let's say your favorite player is on your favorite team. If he were to sign with another team, would you root for his new team or stick with the old one?
That would be really hard. I would probably still root for Dallas but I would also root for Dirk's team. Glad Dirk is staying though.
No player is bigger than the team if you really are a true fan of a team. My favorite player is pretty replaceable anyway, Raja Bell so I wouldn't be too upset.A better one for me would be if Anquan Boldin left the Cardinals and well, I don't know. I usually root for the team but the Cardinals piss me off. I'd probably still be a Cards fan or just put all my attention on the Ravens.
if my favorite player on my favorite team left I'd hope he'd fail at everything he does, because with me the team comes first
I'm a Celtic fan for life. Nothing can change that. They can trade Pierce, Wally, Delonte, Rondo, Al, Perk and start a bunch of Scalabrines, and I'll still be a fan.
No. My favorite team is the Knicks but I still love to watch Kobe. If he swithed over to lets say the Jazz. I wouldn't be cheering for the Jazz but I will be watching their games now that Kobe is on them.
If Chris Bosh signed with another team, I would accept it, and root for him to do well, but I would remain a Raptors fan, and not switch over to whatever team he plays on.That would be stupid. And what would I do when he retires, or gets old? The team comes first before the player
If Amare Stoudemire or Shawn Marion left the Suns, I would stick with the Suns and hope they lose to us every time they come and play us so they can see what a bad choice it was to leave us.If it was Steve Nash, it would be different. I would still stick with the Suns, but I wouldnt be mean to him.
If say, Chris Bosh left the Raptors, I'd still like the Raptors, but also probably end up liking the team he went to. Spreading the love if you will
It all depends on the terms of him leaving. Lets say Dirk left the Mavericks in the fashion of Terrell Owens,I'd start to really dislike Dirk and still root for the Mavericks whole heartedly. But lets say he left with mutual respect still between him and the organization, I'd still root for the Mavericks, but I'd also root for him no matter what team he went to. Kind of like what happened with Steve Nash and Michael Finley; I still love how they play and I'm still a fan of the as individual players. Its just that I can't root for the Spurs or the Suns because they are rivals to the Mavs.
If TMac left the Rockets, I would still be on the Rockets 24/7 but I would be on the team TMac went to 24/7 also. Im a huge fan of both.
HA. How about this same thing just happened to me...My favorite player by Far is Ben Wallace and there's no way I am going to ditch the Pistons...I am a Piston fan for life...the only thing that changed is that I will watch more Bulls games just to see what happens with Ben.
I'm a Nets fan, and became a Jason Kidd fan when he arrived in NJ. If he leaves, I'll still be a Jason Kidd fan, and I will follow him closely, but I'll remain true to the Nets.
If pierce left, which isn't going to happen, I still would be a Celtics fan clearly but I would definately follow the team he went to and continue to see how he's doing.....that team would probably become my 2nd favorite team
When Chauncey leaves the Pistons due to Free Agency/Retirement, I'll still be a Piston fan. As Reppin said, Pistons for Life.
What about Minnesota fans? Any Timberwolves fans here? What if KG leaves? Will you Timb fans be loyal to the team or change views?
This has happened a couple times, Kidd, Nash and Fin. But as you see I'm still rooting for the Mavs and they will always have players I enjoy to watch and root for. If Dirk were to leave, and it will happen, I'd still be a Mavs fan through and through.
QUOTE

That would be really hard. I would probably still root for Dallas but I would also root for Dirk's team. Glad Dirk is staying though.
Probably? My question is when Dirk retires or ends his career possibly with another team. Would you root for the Mavericks then?
I'm like most everyone else, when my favorite player leaves, I still cheer for the Magic. I just also like to cheer for the other player, not the team they go to, but I cheer for the player. Being a Magic fan, my favorite player is always leaving, Mcgrady, Shaq, Hardaway, Armstrong, they always leave. So sooner or later, I'm expecting Jameer Nelson to leave the Magic, and then someone else will be my favorite player.
well this has happened to me a lot, and for Basketball I dont look at it as a team sport but more individual, I think it has to do with the way they advertise itI just dont think the NBA plays basketball the way it should be played, if one man alone can lead a team to the playoffs(aka LeBron James/Allen Iverson/Kobe Bryant/Kevin Garnett) than it's not being played the right waySo wherever Stevie goes, I'm right behind himANYOTHER SPORT THOUGH-Forget it......die hard St.Louis Cardinal/Miami Dolphin fan for life
