Not that I want to get involved in a political discussion but I think Merkley has done a decent job at representing the whole state. As long as Oregonians don't elect a Ted Cruz type, I won't complain.

He doesn't represent the farmers & ranchers- and many others. He's basically a liberal "yes man". At least Smith voted what he felt was right more. And he looked out for the interests of others outside Portland. That said, I think Merkley is a decent man. I have met him and like him.
Well clearly us Portland residents want the Eastern Oregon residents to pay for their own schools, and we want to promote the thinning of trees to protect against forest fires. Clearly the logging revenue is just a front.
Smith represented his own business interests and his own personal views. Sometimes they coincided with rural Oregonians, sometimes they didn't.
Merkley is a well respected senator who brings crediblity to the state of Oregon and he has not forgotten Oregon's issues while at DC. he is shoe in for the next election
Not long after I was notified that I would no longer be covered by the health plan I had for 52 years, provided by my employer, now former employer, I sent the following mail to Merkley, Wyden, and DeFazio. Fallowing my mail is Merkleys response in which he does not even address the main question. Senator, How can it be when you voted for this ACA that you didn't know that people covered by their employer or former employer in the case of retirees, would be dropped by the employer? The law contains a Tax on the employers for each person that they would continue to cover. Why was this tax implemented? It can not be to obtain revenue to cover other people. If it was, that was very dumb as well as totally unfair to the employers as well as the employees and retirees. It sure looks to me like the tax was intended to encourage employers to drop retirees and spouses to force more people into the exchanges. You fellas really deserve a just reward for this plan. Do you really think he wrote you personally? That form letter may not have even been written by his own staff. Not that I see anything wrong with the letter, but I think it's a mistake to assume it somehow is evidence of his understanding, or lack thereof, on the issue. barfo
Well I retired after many years of working there. I guess former employer is the correct status for a retiree to use.
Oh yeah, I probably wrote to Mark Hatfield five or six time while he was one of our Senators. I am sure his staff answered for him too, however I do not recall it reading like they never read your letter. He always answered your question. By the way, Merkleys lack of an answer is another lie in not telling what he knows as true.
