So Portland rents him for the rest of the year until he becomes a UFA? He'll get over $8m/per, IMO, from someone this summer.
The only way he's worth that to Portland is as a hybrid 4/5 backup, which I don't see because of Robinson. If Portland wants to give up on TRob, then it might be worth it to have someone like Hawes who can play both frontcourt positions and could easily step into the starting lineup if either Aldridge or Lopez had to sit out a few games
Of course, the only way Olshey makes this deal is if he thinks that Hawes is potentially a good long-term fit as a 3rd big with LA and Lopez, with the knowledge that we would be unable to sign him this offseason without bird rights. And even if he did choose to sign elsewhere, Leonard/Wright is not a terrible rental price for a sweet-shooting 7-footer with excellent passing skills.
Agreed. If Olshey thinks the time is now, you go for it because opportunities don't come along that often. I think Hawes could be a 4-5 year fit for that window of opportunity to go with Aldridge and Fropez. In 5 years, the oldest of that group would be 33. His passing ability is underestimated I believe and if he can get 3.5 assists for Philly, what could he do for Portland?
While I like the idea Philly the best player Philly gets in return in Meyers Leonard I think they would likely pass. I do not see us giving up a first for Hawes but a combo of Robinson and Leonard etc. might fit into what we would be willing to part with.
Would I be a racist if I thought a post "Blackbuster trade idea" with a link trading all black Blazers for all white players would be funny?
I think he'll get at least that much. Philly is in good shape cap space wise. They may sign him as part of their young core.
The trade in the OP is made, and then Hawes re-signs with Philly this summer. The outrage on this board would be almost worth having that happen.
