    Chris Haynes on Talkin Ball

"I'm not calling them a championship team but..."

Christ, Chris. Just call them what they are a "championship team". They played and acted like a championship team. It's ok to firmly jump on board with such an idea. I'm totally on it. I think if they can get a legit big man without moving any of the core. The league will have some problems.

Totally forgot about the Lamarshmello name because he's been so awesome this year. The way he is playing and the way the team complements him has removed any regret I have about the Roy/Oden pairing. Roy wasn't the outside shooter that Wes/Nic/Dame are. I honesty don't know if this team would be any better with him on the court. Plus if you have Oden down low are we able to put LaMarcus into the low block as he is now?

This team is special as is their #1 ranked offense. The Lakers had 4 hall of famers last year and couldn't win a playoff series. Sometimes adding elite talents together doesn't equal the sum of their parts. Adding the correct pieces can exceed their individual worth. I'm happy we have the team we have. In a way I think its much cooler because its not just about adding a bunch of #1 and #2 lottery picks. Its about motivation, hard work, unselfishness, and beautiful team ball.

I didn't watch the game tonight (had a prior commitment tonight..bad ass win!), so I'm not saying this to be Mr Negative Nelson.

But they aren't a championship team. They haven't even won a playoff series. Are they one of the better teams right now? yes. Should they be included in the group of potential contenders? yes.

Olshey is a genius. He can make any move right now and I won't question it including one that moves CJ McCollum.

As for LA. There is even today doubters of him and are still calling him LaMarhmallow including a knucklehead or two in another forum. The dude deserves our respect and fandom. He deserves our support. He has earned it. He has grabbed this team by the horns and is doing something many of us never thought he would or could do.

Couldn't a potential contender also be termed a championship team?

I don't think so. to me, you leave that description to teams that have either A: won a title or B: consist of a team made up of players who recently competed for one. ex: Miami is a championship team. San Antonio and a healthy OKC is. Portland is not. If they make it to the CF's, you could make an argument. If they make it to the finals, they should be called that. if they win it? they ARE that.

    Fair enough.

Does it make a difference that they are 5-0 against the three of the leagues top teams?

I think that shows that at least as of now, they should be considered legit. Especially since that record includes 2 wins on the road. And iirc, they have the best record against the top teams (Spurs, Heat, Thunder, Pacers and Portland)

To be fair, they were a rebound away from beating Heat in 6.

The events that led Popovich to blow a gasket and get himself ejected were quite entertaining. The Spurs were 3-9, 6 points (including a Duncan blocked shot attempt and a Diaw 3pt air ball) in the first 4:42 of the 3rd quarter, while the Blazers were 5-9, 11 points (including a Wes 3pt make and LA with 6pts) in that span.

Pop saw his team letting the game slip away, LA abusing Diaw in the post, and his team was missing too many shots to keep pace with the Blazer. Dame would make both technical foul shots to extend Portland’s lead to 10. It was evident that Pop wasn’t going to stop screaming at the rookie official until they ejected him. It was a good move that appeared to bring SA new life as they would take the lead by 1 point over the final 7 minutes of the 3rd quarter.

Aldridge drew 2 fouls (on Ayers and Duncan), and Batum another foul (Ginobili) in a 30 second span with 2:30 to play in the 3rd. Those 3 were the only fouls called on SA all quarter. SA would go nearly 7 minutes going into the 4th before another foul was called on them, and wouldn’t receive another foul until under a 1 min to play, Portland up 7, the Spurs were forced to intentionally foul (3 times).

So, from start of the 2nd half, till the 1 min mark in the 4th (23 min), SA was called for 4 fouls. Portland was called for 13 during the same period.

Not a good game for the black and grey – SA or the officials.

No. Championship contender? Yes of course the blazers are. They have not won a championship or even a playoff series. Yet. Ergo they are not a championship team. Yet.

    Soon. Very soon.

Yes. That article yesterday from the Utah paper was also good. So it's possible. Just not in the shitty Oregonian.

OKC is not a championship team. You have to win one.
