Keith Law, whoever he is, has ranked all MLB farm systems. Yankees rank No.20.......For years I have felt that Yankee drafting has been bad. They have not built their system with capable replacements. Their scouting contingent sucks. They are getting free passes. I'd fire all of them. But then again, they are going the FA route again. The cupboards are almost bare.....
...part of the problem is because the Yanx have generally been near the very bottom every year in the order of the draft because they have also been near the top of the standings every year. (big difference in picking #1 or #2 instead of picking #29 or #30) ...and some of those late first round picks they should have had were surrendered to other teams as compensation for signing FAs from those teams. ...they also have traded away a lot of young talent in lieu of veterans and FAs. ...all I know is that this team looks so much better than last years' team. Yes, the Yanx lost Cano but they went out and signed the FOUR remaining top FAs available. ...Some teams rebuild...the Yanx simply reload...and no, I don't care about the money.
^^^^ I have posted this sentiment before. As a fan, with particular focus on the last 20 years, I thank God that the ownership commits the resources that allows this organization to succeed. Can you imagine if we ever went 69-93. Not every year is going to be 1998, but they always try to make it that way. And like you, I don't give a shit about the money. As far as the farm, it can only get better. I would love to see Manny B, Sanchez, and Heathcott have a rebound years.
Yes, that is part of the problem (the being near the bottom and then surrendering some of the early picks they did have), but honestly, when was the last prospect the Yankees DRAFTED who worked out... not international market signing, drafted... Carl Everett (1990), Pettitte (1990), & Jeter (1992)? Phil Hughes in 2004? Ian Kennedy in 2006? They haven't had a slot in the first half of the first round since the early 90's, but still... they should have drafted someone else worth their salt since 1992...
...Ajax, Gardner, and there have been others. ... I'm not saying that the Yanx have had great success with the draft...only pointing out part of the problem. ...and if you think about it, there were not a lot of open spots for draftees/prospects for a long time. Because of existing starters, there simply was not a whole lot of opportunities for others. I mean who was gonna bump Jeter, ARod, Cano, Tex, Posada, and all the others?
Just because they wouldn't have bumped said players doesn't excuse them for not having had better drafts... I neglected to list Gardner and Austin Jackson... word is still out on Gary Sanchez...
they did draft that one pitcher (forgot his name) who went back to school and ended up being drafted by the pirates and pitched in the playoffs...cole I believe ???
...I already acknowledged that. (" I'm not saying that the Yanx have had great success with the draft...")
Not sure we'll ever see the perfect storm of 1990 again to have a truly impactful farm system again. The Boss was suspended, Gene Michael was calling the shots, and we had better picks and there was deeper talent in the draft. Oh and plenty of good fortune.
