The Rangers seem to have made the decision to deal Callahan if he isn’t signed because they don’t want to lose him for nothing when they could replenish some assets they lost over the years. (Pierre LeBrun on TSN 1050)

Glen Sather may also be applying a bit of a pressure tactic to Callahan and his agent by having his name out in the open in trade talks. (Pierre LeBrun on TSN 1050)

I don't even think Callahan will feel pressure from any rumors..either way he'll be on a playoff team and still get to choose his terms this summer.

If they are actually going to deal Cally its great news. A 1st rounder and a close to ready prospect really help this team down the road. I guess I'll suck it up about girardi. sure high minute top pair dmen don't grow on trees but trust me in the 4th/5th/6th year of whatever deal he gets we are going to be seriously upset.

Sounds like cally days are numbered as a ranger. It will be sad to see him go. I agree he is not worth the money he is asking. It will be interesting to see how the locker room reacts if the captain is dealt.

I'll stick with what I said earlier that girardi signs shortly and if cally doesn't come to his senses he will be gone for assets by the trade deadline. As for teammates missing him so much I think only a handful have played with him for more than a couple of years if that and with the amount of times he's out injured their probably used to playing without him. I think miller or whoever we get if he's traded will not be much of a drop off if any in production when you consider the production or should I say lack of production from cally these days.

Essentially what Callahan is trying to do is screw the team over with a Drury type deal. However, he's not as good as Drury was and we all know Drury's contract was a disaster. Again, to me his contract demands state he doesn't want to play here. He's not on the PP unit much any longer and he's probably sulking about that. He looks very slow in this system. A guy with 9 goals, 11 A in 38 games just asked for 7 years, 42 million. LMAO.

People stating he will get that in UFA are lost IMO. Even a crappy team looking to hit the cap floor would be hesitant to do that.

Callahan's appeal was how gritty he was with the blocked shots and throwing his body around. Constant injuries and new system doesn't allow him to play like that any longer. Sure he can still score some goals but honestly there's guys like him all over the league. Not to mention he's not all that big. I like him and think he's a good guy but there's no way I give him a contract like that. He's not a franchise player that would command a commitment of that degree.

The fact he had the balls to ask for that contract disgusts me. It's one thing to add for a nice pay day. It's another to ask for a star salary because some stupid team like Toronto gave Clarkson a moronic deal.

Lets take a look at players with a salary of 6 million or higher shall we...
These are guys with a cap hit of 6 million
Tyler Myers...OMG really this guy makes 6 million..no wonder the Sabs blow
Jordan Staal...3 years younger but is he much better than Cally....numbers don't say so but again we are looking at a declining Cally Staal his upside
Taylor Hall...first overall selection has put up numbers but is is a two way player? again id take him straight up over Cally
Tukka Rask...a top flight goalie...Boston wouldn't trade him straight up for a signed cally at similar salary

    6.1 million guys
Sedin twins....umm really you think either one is on the same planet as you Mr Callahan?

    6.25
Kari Lethonen nothing special here...very pricey goalie
Ryan Miller can be a dominate goalie..horrible team around him

    6.4
Thomas Vaniek....a pure goal scorer but not much defense...again I wouldn't trade him straight up if I was the Icelanders for cally

    6.5 Million
Plenty of guys here...all blow Cally away

    St. Louis, Martin » F TBL 38 2011 2015 4 $6,500,000
    35. Sharp, Patrick » F CHI 32 2012 2017 5 $6,500,000
    36. Toews, Jonathan » F CHI 25 2010 2015 5 $6,500,000
    37. Kane, Patrick » F CHI 25 2010 2015 5 $6,500,000
    38. Garrison, Jason » D VAN 29 2012 2018 6 $6,500,000
    39. Carter, Jeff » F LAK 29 2011 2022 11 $6,500,000
    40. Getzlaf, Ryan » F ANA 28 2013 2021 8 $6,500,000
    41. O'Reilly, Ryan »

So Mr Captain...look at yourself in the mirror and please stop overestimating your worth.

    Thank you.

I'd take Stewart and a first. Bottom line, you stand a good chance to draft a better player than Cally with 2 first round picks. Plus, Stewart while being inconsistent is still a very tough, mean forward who scores 20 goals a year. I'm not a big fan of his and would never want him over Callahan at 4 million. I said that before. Stewart can be lazy. However, throw in the first round pick and I'd do it.

Big with a mean streak definitely helps. Even money I wouldnt do it, but Stewart at 4m (with a pick) is better for this team than Cally at 6m. If this hits I'd put him with Miller next year, those 2 could be a pain in the ass to play against while also putting some in the net.

One concern would be his skating. He's a slower guy, no? Not ideal for AV's system but his size and toughness could compensate for that.

Apparently they've given one team permission to talk contract with RCs agent, so it may be St.Louis.

Callahan hasn't even play that physical this year seems like he's going through the motions to avoid injury until he signs a new contract. Not worth any more than $5 mil, if Cally truly wanted to show he's the Captain show it by agreeing to a fair contract, $5 mil is an almost 20% raise.

If Glen can sign Girardi to a deal before year's end in the $5.2-$5.5 range I'd do it in a heartbeat, Dan's been a solid player. I'd be surprised because I think Dan can get a much better offer in free agency.

I kind of agree with 71, I don't see Girardi as a top defenseman in this league. He's good, but he's not great and I don't think he is a good fit for AV's system. In my opinion, he is replaceable.

I wouldn't say he is great either. But I do think he is very good. He plays a lot of important minutes for us, and I think some under value how difficult that is to replace.

Within a week I doubt this matters anyway, because it sounds like he will be re-signed by the Olympic break, or worst case shortly thereafter.

    Cally on the other hand:

The Rangers want the contract situation with Ryan Callahan resolved by the Olympic Roster freeze which is next Friday at 3PM. (NY Post)

Glen Sather is willing to sign Callahan to a five-year contract extension but he is holding firm on wanting seven-years and “has no intention of taking a hometown discount to remain with the Rangers.” (NY Post)

Darren Dreger reported with certainty that the Rangers will trade Callahan if he does not lower his contract demands.

“Unless his contract demands soften there is a 100% chance that he is being traded by the Rangers. They are not paying what he is asking. (Darren Dreger)

Ryan Callahan’s future will be decided by next Friday

I don't mind Callahan going elsewhere, as long as the Rangers can get someone for him that will help. As for his contract demands, you aim high and then gradually come down. If he doesn't want to be reasonable, then he is free to go elsewhere.

There is shooting high and being realistic. Right now hr is shooting wide more often than not in both contract negotiations and on the ice
