I think there are several types of fans, and each of us fits into one (I can't think of them all though).

The fan who acts like they support the team when they lose/cheers them on, but that's to cover the fact that they're super negative when the team wins a game. Like, how how the wins aren't real or don't show the teams real ability. They are always feeling persecuted, and victimized, and often times think they're pulling a fast one on people, when in reality people are making fun of them to their face. Almost like they're a middle school kid who thinks they're pulling a fast one. Think Mixlito.

The "everything is great" fan. There is nothing wrong with the 15th man, don't trade him! He might turn into Jermaine O'neal!

The "stats back me up" fan, who can scour the internet for hours (well, minutes in todays world) to find a single stat that can back up their point. This group has two different factions, and they tend to argue a lot. One goes for 1 stat that backs up their point (and ignores everything else) and the other hunts down literally every stat in the world that backs up their point.

The "I'd make a better coach/gm/owner" fan. Every trade they make, draft they pick and free agent they "could sign", they know a better choice. They have favorite players in college that they are obsessed with and can't comprehend why their favorite player from Syracuse isn't doing jack squat in the NBA.

The "Long time" fan. These are front runner fans who have been long time (insert team here) fans, but couldn't tell you who was on the team 5 years ago. Not to be confused with the...

"Follows a player from team to team" fan. For example, a Steve Nash fan is a long time "Suns" fan, and hates the Lakers, until the very second that he leaves Phoenix and joins the Lakers. Then he becomes a fan of the "Lake Show" and promises they'll win a title or 8 because of Nash.

The "HCP" fan. No need to explain.

The "Fan from the good old days". In the case of the Blazers, this fan glorifies everything and anything from the "good old days". For example, they talk about how great the team played, or the players on it, or how great the owner was back then, and how they didn't sell out the arena name/create a mascot/change the logo. They put far more value on the players who were on a title winning team, over players who didn't win a title but put up far better stats.

The "I told you so". No need to explain that one.

The "Mags" fan. Incredible homer, but not obnoxious homer, and learns on the fly.

The "One player crusade" fan. Much like the "follows" fan, this fan picks one or two players on the team, usually a fan favorite/best player, and picks their game apart. Seems to think that every fan thinks they're the best player at their position, and never cops to any positive rep the player gets.

Not to be confused with the

"Everyone is a soccer mom, I'm the realist" fan. This fan, as the name suggests, thinks every fan is a soccer mom, and they're the only one who sees things for how they are. Whether they're doing this out of spite, sarcasm or just because it's fun, they often will act like the ENTIRE fan base is the same as one extreme homer who refuses to let anyone talk bad about the players on his or her team.

    The "Extreme homer". See above.

The "casual" fan. Likes it when they win, doesn't pay much attention when they lose.

The "anti-hipster hipster" fan. Tries to sound smart, suave and snarky, almost refusing to admit they're just as big of a dork as everyone else.

The "flame war" fan. Almost as if on que, they arrive to stir shit up, and create long battles on message boards/in person, about something. Not always related to the topic, and not always incorrect. Kind of related to the...

"Must have last word" fan. must...get....last....word....in.....to....prove....I'm....a.....better.....fan.....!

There are many more. I think that most of us can find parts of each one of these in our own fan style. I know there is a lot of these that are true of me, and I'm sure if anyone adds more, they'll be true of me too.

Feel free to add on more or just turn this into a flame war

I'm definitely a stats back me up fan. I love looking at stats anyway, so it's a natural fit. But since I don't gave as much time as I used to to do that, I'm more of an anti-hipster hipster fan. :ghoti:

I don't think I can put myself into a narrow category, but to add to your list, I do enjoy tracking the development of our young players. I'm sometimes hesitant to trade them until I think I know how they are going to turn out, but I'm willing to trade anyone to improve the team. (I guess I root for laundry.) Every game I wish we could get a huge lead just to see the young guys play.

I'm also a 'long-time' fan (from the beginning -- although I don't have the encyclopedic memory of some of you) who longs for the days of yore when there was more 'player movement/ball movement'. Those '76-'78 teams are a distant wet dream, and epitomize the kind of ball I'd like to see on the court. One reason I hated McMillan and I love this team!!

i watch as many games as i can, and when i watch games i chew my nails and pace around the room, fist pumps and facepalms, but when they suck ass (last couple weeks last year) i might watch less if i have something better to do

i tend to give the front office the benefit of the doubt

i tend to support anyone on the team, just because a player isnt a starter or in the rotation doesnt mean "they are garbage" or whatever, everyone cant be an all star. although in a moment of rage though i might say something like "FUCK YOU JARRETT JACK, AND FUCK YOUR STUPID BIG FEET"

i tend to be glass half full

i died a little with oden

    whatever that makes me

I don't have a pithy name for the kind of fan I am. I seem to be a combination of many of the fans julius describes. To me, this team is more than a team. It's a touchstone for my home city. It's a member of my family. It's my birthright (even though I was born a year before this team was a glint in Harry Glickman's eye), and the birthright of my son. I love it unconditionally, even when it needs to be scared straight or checked into rehab. I take most things about this team more personally than I should. It has given me the highest of highs (June 5, 1977) and the lowest of lows (June 4, 2000). For it, I always hope for better days.

In short, my love for this team is deep, unwavering and everlasting.

When it comes to blazers I'm just the best fan ever. In 6th grade my friend and I decided since we lived in oregon so we needed to be blazer fans been one ever since and ill be a blazer fan till I die. As a kid I collected basketball cards I had over 200 Steve smith cards alone and I use to burn Shaq/Kobe cards before we played them. I also had a Shaq poster that I covered with tacks everytime he scored I stuck him with a new tack hoping to see him fall on the court in pain. My mom was pissed when I took that poster down and has a wall full of holes in the shape of an orgre.

I'm a long time, glass half full, optimistic, go team, get em next time fan who will probably criticize the assistant coaching staff first every season but occassionaly have it out for a player on the team I want to see gone...(Raymond Felton, JR Rider, Nolan Smith). My true wrath comes out whenever Scott Foster refs a game or the Lakers come to town. I like defense, I like team play and I like character. Folks who've known me over the years know I'm not a stat guy at all. This is probably my favorite Blazer roster ever top to bottom.

Julius left out the type of fan who is desperately lonely, so between his other readings, he goes to this site several times a day, trying to get along while also expressing a few mild opinions.

Man, I hate guys like that.
