I've long thought this should be the case.

If gay rights people throw a fit about this, it's only because they want their "win."

The government shouldn't be involved in marriage at all. It should be strictly between the church and the individual. It's a religious ceremony.

The government should offer civil unions that any two people can enter into legally, and that's that.

What if you want a divorce? Who gets the house if one of the spouses die?

The one and only concern I have about this is that if marriage is completely deregulated in every sense, then 3 or 4 or 9 people can marry. There can be forced incestual marriages. Marriage with animals..... And mostly for tax reasons or other underlying reasons- some of which may be insanity or rape.

Total deregulation has a nice sound to it, but be careful what you wish for.

Go the Muslim route: "I divorce you, I divorce you, I divorce you."

As for all the other messy stuff, there still is common law marriage and survivor/inheritance law. If you want to codify your relationship with the government, get a civil union.

Denny, do you really need the government to hold your hand with everything?

I don't need much from the govt., but settling civil disputes via the courts is a real protection of property rights.

The Lee Marvin kind of common law case is rare compared to divorce cases. You don't get those divorce cases without a recognized marriage.

It is clear this idea needs a lot of thought, and consideration to the slew of issues that would result.

When you die, I could claim rights to your fortune with a form letter from the Internet Church of Bob. Your wife and kids would suffer until the courts get around to hearing the case.

And you won't be happy because gays will marry at will and their union called "marriage." Even if initially recognized by that church of Bob. Marriage will not be what you think it should be.

Oklahoma seems like a likely place for this. I suspect there are plenty of folk there who would be happy to marry their siblings or the family pet, so this really just opens things up for the people of Oklahoma to be as free (and freaky) as they desire.

Good point. The church of Bob could recognize plural marriages and incestual ones as well.

Sure would put an end to the "one man, one woman" concept.

Actually it would not change a thing. People that care, a man and a woman would be married in their church like they do today. The others would continue to do as they will and as they do today with one exception,
    no State issued certificates.

Others would get married by Carl's Jr. Trainee. If the state recognizes the church marriage in any way, it would equally have to recognize the drive thru one.

Ha! Rachel going balistic over the idea. That's a big vote in favor of the plan.

I think if it's strictly a word, i wouldn't mind. But I'm married now, so I guess I can't judge for gay people who can not. But if it is just a word, EVERYTHING else must be the same if you want a civil union. Jobs must honor spouse rights for insurance. Hospitals must honor visitation rights. Tax code must be the same.
