The Yankees made an offer to free agent infielder Stephen Drew earlier in the off-season, believed to be for two or three years, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Nevertheless, the report indicates, the Yankees do not appear to be one of the four teams still pursuing the 30-year-old. At the time of the offer, says Sherman, New York was making offers to multiple players while explaining that they would pull them back as necessary as things developed. Drew hoped at the time to land a bigger deal, and the club ultimately withdrew its offer at some point during its massive outlay on several prominent free agents. Notably, Sherman's article does not indicate that the Yankees have current interest in Drew, but instead throws more cold water on the idea. (Other recent reports, of course, have said that the team does not intend to pursue him.) Sherman writes that principal owner Hal Steinbrenner called for a halt to spending after signing Masahiro Tanaka, and that the club is "not bending for Drew." http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/02/yankees-made-offer-to-drew-earlier-in-off-season.html
...looks like greed, as well as Boras once again misreading the market, will burn both Drew and Morales.
At this point, if that really was the reason and it is indeed turned down because it wasn't enough, I don't blame the Yankees for not being interested... it also seems like Steinbrenner (I forget which one) has put a stop to spending from here out... so we'll see....
I still think they may add if someone gets released towards the end of spring training. Right now the bullpen is a work in progress and Kelly Johnson is the starting 3rd baseman as well as the backup 1st baseman and probably 2nd baseman. Something does not seem right to me about that.
...I dunno, I don't think another team's castoffs will be any better than what they already have...I'm thinking there's either a trade looming or they'll go with what they have and cross their fingers. ...of course, there's an outside chance that Drew and Boras will wake up from the ether and the Yanx can sign him at "a discount".
I think when all is said & done Drew is going to be sorry that he turned down the Red Sox one year offer of 14M. And I'm really surprised that no one has signed Morales yet.
I feel there is a major trade brewing, a shortstop from Colorado who maybe playing 3B this year? Its been done before I hear!
Boras has to be feeling the heat from Jay-Z and his ilk. If the traditional agents can't get the sweetheart deals for their clients, we're going to see more of these media marketers infiltrating the MLB. Gimme a greedy Boras anyday over the thug in a suit.
