They'll be another Yankee Captain. When? I don't know - he might be high school right now, or younger- ...or just maybe we could get a sleeper from one of the kids in the lower minors, you never know. But I'm not saying he'll be as good as Jeter. We tragically lost a great homegrown leader/captain when Thurman Munson died in a plane crash- and approx 5 or so years later, Don Mattingly arrived and he was a worthy classy Captain- and Mattingly wasn't exactly a high profile super stud draft pick and how many of us realize/remember that Jeter actually played with Mattingly just before Donnie Baseball retired. They'll be another Yankee Captain, they'll ALWAYS be another Captain, when? Can't say but he'll have his own special qualities and skills.
No I figure (god willing) I've got a good 20 years left & I just don't see it happening in that time.
Have you seen our farm system? I mean unless we grab someone like Trout, I just don't see it happening any time soon.
Aside from Willie Randolph who was a co-captain with Ron Guidry, and played a handful of games with the Pirates before becoming a Yankee - it's been pretty much that way. As long as the next Yankee captain does not advertise by wearing an embarrassingly vain "C" on his jersey as did some guy in Boston, that will be good. Not sure there is a reason to name a cpatain anytime soon after Jeter retires.
I don't think there needs to be any rush to name a new captain... Now, I'm not saying this will happen (nor do I think there is a shot in hell at it happening)... but what if someone with poise and class like let's say Andrew McCutchen was acquired by the Yankees and had his contract extended by the Yankees... would you be ok with him being named captain? Again, not saying it will happen, but if some bizzare twist of fate had it happen, would you or anyone on this board be ok with him being named captain?
