The problem I think we all have is that we feel there is no plan of attack by the front office.
It shouldn't have come to 3 days before the trade deadline to either have Cally signed or traded, same with Girardi and even Hank.

You give up all leverage with other teams when they know you wont (or shouldn't pay what Cally is asking) now we have to give up an asset like a Kristo to pawn with Cally on getting back someone decent. Or do we just lose Cally altogether and get nothing for an asset that may have gotten back something decent last summer?

A small group of posters said a few weeks ago we should be sellers and it made sense, now we are closer to the deadline and still no better than we were talent wise, less games remaining and lost value on our assets. Terrible managing.

I fear like Chuck we will not do anything in the next three days, maybe get in the 8th seed bet destroyed in the first round and get a middle of the pack 1st round pick which we will use for an offensive defensemen that may or maynot be good in three years

Last night's first period was a case study in what I've posted many times. Lots of great chances, lots of shots, but just an inability to finish. We have an abundance of playmakers but only one real finisher, and bigger teams like Boston can take him away easily. We needed another scorer this offseason, I posted 50000x we should have gone after Ryan, but we stood pat and we're seeing the consequences.

You dont become sellers just because you arent a Stanley Cup favorite. If that was the case then there would be about 25 or so sellers every season. We're still in a playoff spot. Schedule lightens up a little bit next few games. Maybe I'm delusional but aside from Callahan I'm not selling.

Just remember, the playoff seeding is not like past seasons. If we finish 2 or 3 in the Met division we play the 2 or 3 team in the Met division regardless of # of points. So we avoid the Pens/Bruins in round 1 for sure if we finish 2 or 3 in the Met division.

I want to get into the playoffs for sure, but we need to be smart that is all. That is the key.

If Sather does nothing on Wednesday I will be furious though. We need to at least do something to try and improve for this season, and maybe next season as well.

I go after Stewart even if we end up resigning Callahan. Problem is I dont want to give up picks to get him so not sure what other assets we have. Maybe something built around John Moore?

Prod, agree on the overreacting on this board. It is brutal and some painful reads. You and i were driving the Trade-For-Ryan bus last offseason and it was a big disappointment when it didn't happen. Oh well, Sather didn't want to postpone his fishing trip, what can we do.

We can definitely contend, but we need Sather to get off his rear end to do that.

I guess being sellers needs a better definition, b/c when Dis says we need to sell now b/c we have a great window starting in 2015, that doesn't add up to me. In my opinion, if you're selling is b/c you've given up and are looking to get younger, cheaper assets for the future and/or picks, and these assets/picks aren't going to make us better a year from now than we are today b/c they need time to mature, and in the case of picks that could take years. If the assets we're getting can have near-term impact, then that's not being a seller, but rather a buyer.

To me we need to be serious buyers in the next 2-3yrs to go for it, then it the window closes that's when you need a GM with a vision to decide whether he can squeeze another run out of that core or if he can sell off and rebuild quickly.

That's the key. We should be all in the next 2-3 seasons. Over and over again I say it, and a few others do as well, and it is clear as day that is what we should be doing.

We should NOT sell if that hurts us the next 2 seasons. If sell means for this season right now, and it helps us next season hands down, then I will be on board.

No matter what Sather needs to do something here like 31 said. Show a pulse dude.

I can only hope that Sather is trying to soften up Callys demands in order to make him a little more attractive as trade bait. Getting him down (sounds crazy to say that) to 6/6, then passing on giving him that, may make some other GM think that maybe they could get him for a little less than that. I don't even want him now at the original 5Y/30M deal, I pray they don't go higher or longer than that. It is perfectly within his rights to ask for this kind of cash, but he is only marginally worth 5/30 IMO. I'd rather see him walk for nothing than to pay one dime over 5/30, so get what you can for him, and send him packing today or tomorrow. Give Miller that role, and use the 6M for someone that can actually put up 60-70 pts each year...

31 I get what you are saying and I am not saying full sell, I am saying try to optimize the team for 2015. That includes NOT paying Callahan his ridiculous contract request and involves trading him now. That also includes trading Boyle. Not huge moves mind you. I would also explore getting St Louis at the draft, you will likely get a better deal then.

The sell I am talking about isn't big wholesale changes anyway. I just don't want the team to trade draft picks for players that are not going to land a cup. I hope this team turns it up and finishes strong. I just feel like they are about to panic and overpay for Callahan and then trade more youth for scoring. If it happens I will hope for the best and pray for a deep run but its not what I would do.

I do think this team is close to being a top 6 team in NHL but we are not there yet

Dis, we should also look to move moore or strahlman, and dorsett along with boyle if we can get some picks either separately or in package. All are imminently replaceable.

They won't move Stralman, they want to re-sign him for cheap which is a good idea. He hasn't earned too big a raise. Now is when he needs to be working to move Pigeon droppings like Boyle for a pick or package with a good prospect for 4th line help the rest of the year. That's where he falls asleep, doing the minor things.

7:55PM: Callahan’s agent has presented the Rangers with their latest proposal and is awaiting a response. (NY Post)

7:01PM: “There have been some negotiations in the last number of days and where Ryan Callahan was originally asking for a seven year deal in excess of $7 million per year, it’s now down to six years at somewhere just south of $6.5 million dollars per year. The Rangers have recently extended an offer of six years and $6 million per year. What we are really talking about is less than half a million per year over a six year period, or under $3 million dollars.” (Bob McKenzie on NHL Live)

“There are two ways of looking at it: (Bob McKenzie on NHL Live)
-“wow, Glen Sather spends that much on lunch on July 1 sometimes, it shouldn’t be a problem, split the difference and call it a day and there we go boom, you’re done, keep the captain in the fold and everything is wonderful.”
-“The flip side is that Callahan believes he can get a lot more going to open market and he is already sacrificing earning power by staying and taking a lesser deal. The New York Rangers already feel, I think, that they are overpaying a guy that is a $5.5, $5.75 and that they are going the extra mile by going to $6 million a year. So it’s gonna be interesting to see where it goes. I don’t know that either side has that much wiggle room but we have a little less than 48 hours to see if they can get something done. It obviously depends what the trade market holds for the Rangers with Callahan.”

You see it coming. 6/36-6/39 somewhere in that range. Don't like it.

Just proves it that this organization is always run by incompetent has-beens. One stanley cup in almost 74 years now.

Why does he think he is entitled to a higher cap hit than Dustin Brown's hit of 5.8m on his extension. Two captains, both playing hard-working games, both 29, except Brown has broken 50 points 5 times and never missed more than 5 games in a season in his entire career.

Yeah Brown signed for 8 years but if we're being honest I'd rather have Cally for 8 years at 5.6 (his true value compared to Brown) than Cally for 6 years at 6.2. That might be a stretch actually, Brown is durable and Cally is not. But the fact remains, he is not more valuable than Brown to the tune of 1m annually.
