Good to know. When they announced it, I swear they said upgrade and then when I checked the App Store, I saw the $9.99 price. I wouldn't mind trying out Numbers on my rMPB, but not for $19.99 when Excel works perfectly fine and I already have it installed.

I bought iWork with my laptop 3 years ago. It came on CD or DVD, not from the App Store which was brand new at the time. I was not able to update those apps through the app store, and when I contacted Apple about it, they said I wouldn't be able to. A couple years later, they came out with Mavericks and dramatically upgraded versions of the iWork apps and people in my situation were SOL. A lot of people complained and Apple (within a couple days) made the upgrades available through the app store for me. Then they made the apps free, period.

It was a huge deal considering M$ sells you an OS for $300 and productivity apps (M$ Office) for another $100+. Free OS, free productivity apps from Apple.

I've not at all had a need for the M$ apps, even though they are available for Mac. I've worked with a dozen clients and been able to open and create the various M$ file formats. The user interface is a little less "everything including the kitchen sink, good luck figuring it out," but it's been really easy to make gorgeous presentations and slick documents.

    Again, FWIW.

Does it show up as costing $19.99 in app store on your rMBP?

I hear they're going to have Office for Ipad. Doubt I'll need it though.

Yeah, in the Mac App Store, it's $19.99 because I've never owned it. Just like on the iTunes App Store it's $9.99. If my wife didn't get a free copy of Office from work (or $5 or something), I would have just paid the $40 for Pages and Numbers.

Yeah. The software isn't free. It now comes w/ the hardware (like iLife always has) and the upgrades are free.

Yeah, I've been seeing that the upgrade can't tell the difference between a legit, trial or bootleg copy of the older iWork apps. I guess I could do that. I could also pirate music. I guess if I end up wanting it bad enough to do that, I'll just pony up the $20. Thanks for the link though. I might use it just to see if I even like Pages/Numbers.

If those are your 2 options and you are OS agnostic, then I would say iPad. I know people love them, but I have no desire for any of the Samsung software (or 99% of it).

ended up going with the air. I love the size of it and the speed... but forgot how much I hate how locked the OS is. I can return it with no restocking fee, or I can consider jailbreaking it but never tried that before. I know it voids the warranty, but the air just felt so perfect compared to other larger tablets.

iPad air is a bit fragile, more so than the other iPads. I recommend the 4th Generation with the lightning connector. It's almost as powerful and more durable. Plus it will be cheaper now that the iPad Air is out.
