DALLAS -- The Trail Blazers lost an important and painful game here Friday night, but they just might have gained something more important, something more lasting.

Amid a torturous game that saw the Blazers fall behind by 30, go up by four, then trail by two and go back up by seven, only to see it all unravel into a 103-98 loss to the Mavericks, there was Thomas Robinson.
He had 11 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and played active and harrassing defense on Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki. It was so noticeable, so inspiring, that his teammates couldn’t help but dream what this roster could do if he did that more often.

“That takes this team to a whole another level,’’ Wesely Matthews said.

Matthews called Robinson’s 20-minute performance “impactful.” LaMarcus Aldridge said he was the reason the Blazers got back in the game. And coach Terry Stotts said he felt the team played off the energy Robinson brought to the game.

If you’ve noticed, that has been happening more and more of late. Little bursts here. A big moment there. Some promise and hope seemingly always waiting around the corner. But the gaps between his performances are getting closer together. Each impact becoming more emphatic.

And that’s why this loss, so bitter when taken only for its final result, can end up being so important to the rest of this season. The positive reinforcement he received from his coach and teammates after the game is important not because he put up numbers, but how he did it. They were “garbage” points, done inside with some muscle and dirty work. They were energy rebounds. And he was a mostly disciplined defender, drawing a charge and staying grounded amid Nowitzki’s tantilizing pump fakes.

I noticed this earlier on. When watching them in preseason, I noticed how much faster they were on defense. It wasn't them, it was him. He was making up so much ground in such lil time when moving spot to spot.

I really like Thomas and have believed in him from the beginning. It's frustrating when you see consistancy especially if you believe he has it. I would love in the long term for him to become a Buck, BGrant, Mo Lucas type and become a defensive enforcer if not leader for this team. I think he has that in him and I think the team could use that.

I wish LA had half the heart T-Rob does. Same goes for Batum.

Odd that the two players you've singled out have actually had legitimate heart problems...

I don't think Batum has had any heart problems. I know his dad dropped dead of a heart attack on the court.

I guess I should say, he had "reports" of heart problems pre-draft, although they were never confirmed. Still, they were the main reason he dropped to us.

There's a reason Nic hates the Raptors. It's believed that Colangelo floated rumors about a nonexistent heart problem before the draft so that he'd be available for them at #17. They took Hibbert and traded him to Indiana for a decrepit Jermaine O'Neal instead (LOL) and Nic dropped all the way to 25 (thanks, Daryl Morey). Nic had to go through all these extra heart tests during the workouts following the reports. It's all on his and Alexis Ajinca's predraft documentary on youtube.

I wish LaMarsha had Lamarcus' postup game. But this season, Lamarsha is shooting 46% from the field, which is lower than the team's overall eFG%.

I wish LMA was 8ft tall and could play point guard.

And could fly, flying would be good.

Oh and some kind of laser vision. Then he wouldn't have to block shots he could just shoot them out of the sky.

Which brings up a point, if you were really Darth dog you could use the force to block shots on the opposition. Me thinks you're a poser, son.

Some times I ponder if some of LA's recent fatigue problems and behavior on the court here of late are heart related. I hope not but with the franchises luck, I'd hate to get news that he has to retire early due to an heart issue.

I don't know because he has had issues with his heart. And I wonder about his stamina at times. And why a guy who hasn't sat out a whole lot. Has played injury free and seems to be in pretty good shape struggles to make it the entire game playing at a continuios high level. The last couple games he has looked really tired. So these are things that just makes me think. Probably shouldn't but do.

His ceiling is Jerome Williams. I hope he accepts that role. He's horrible offensively, and maybe "LaMarsha" (teehee, he plays like a girl, get it!) and Matthews are pounding into his head that it's OK to be a role player who brings energy and athleticism.

JYD Williams made $51m over his NBA career by being the best garbage man in the game after Rodman retired.
