Marc Staal does not want the contract distractions he saw happen with Dan Girardi and Ryan Callahan to happen to him next season.
Staal has one more season left on his contract but found it distracting to play with all the rumors swirling around Girardi and Callahan. "I saw those two guys go through it with the negotiations and all of the rumors that are impossible to avoid if you're on the last year of your contract, and it's not something I really want to go through," Staal said. "For me, the contract situation is definitely something I would like to take care of over the summer. That's the goal, but that also has to be the way management looks at it, too, in order to get it done." Stay tuned. Mar. 10 - 8:31 am et

Which means he wants to stay. Get this done slats 5.5 to 6 per year for staalsy

I wouldn't mind Staal being re-signed but I wouldn't do it without exploring what they might get back in return from Carolina etc. If they could get a package of Tlusty/Sekara and a prospect like Rask or Diguiseppe I'd do it.

I'd rather just sign him to something reasonable this summer. Although, Rask did turn into a beast in NHL13 in the online leagues/seasons i played.

71, you need to stop with these trade offers where you have us giving up a very good player for total crap. There are basically no spots open for forwards on this team and won't be for a while. Getting forwards back makes little to no sense. Sekera was a nobody before this year. I have no faith in him. His offense is a total fluke this season.

Guys, this is the best sign yet that one of our cornerstone players and imo future captain is more interested in being a ranger and staying then he is in going to Carolina. This is the guy we sign and not trade away and I hope slats is listening loudly and clearly.

yup, it's a pleasant surprise to see him say that. I would have completely understood if he wanted to be a FA so he can go play with his brothers.

What I do not understand is why Cali would not sign over 500K? NY is the capital of advertizing and modeling. You are a captain of the NY Rangers. He is not bad looking, he could have made millions modeling anything, especially being a captain of such team as NY Rangers. I just don't get it. Now he is a regular player in Tampa. I don't get it. It is just bad business decision.

2009 - Based on what i heard it wasn't the money that ultimately was the issue, is the fact that RC wanted a full no-trade and Sather didn't so he traded Ryan instead.

Either way Cally made one of the worst decisions period of all time costing him his captainship in NY, fan adulation in NY and commercial and modeling opportunities in NY. His decision will result in him playing in anonymity, his warts not covered up by the rangers and the reality to other teams who watch over the last 20 games or so and maybe playoffs that he is just not that good. Well played Mr. ex-captain and your dumb ass agent

he will make his money in Buffalo, and if they hit on the many picks they have in deep draft who knows..he may be a few years away from being a cup contender.
wont ever blame the player for going after the most money he can as his career is short compared to normal working class.

Al, I think the 6 mill is the most he will be offered by anybody including buffalo. What the hell does he have in his game to merit 6 mill a year. Blocking shots? Hockey player careers are pretty long if their any good compared to other sports

We will see..buffalo has a lot of cap space and must meet the minimum. Do I think he is a 6.5 or 7 million dollar player HELL NO. Do I think buffalo will spend it...yes

I don't know. These last 19 games he auditions in tampa bay may kill his market value if he plays like he has for the rangers the last few years
