Regardless of what one thinks of the subject, does thus violate free speech? http://wwlp.com/2014/03/14/life-sized-fetus-causes-cafateria-controversy-at-connecticut-school/
Nope. Schools can control what you say/do/wear, etc. The only way ones freedom of speech can be "violated" is if the government did something to restrict/censor your speech.
Public school is government. Otherwise school prayer would be legal, since they can control what you do/say/wear, etc.
Your link has been censored. It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.
nope. a school is. they aren't run by the government. Funding by the government does not equal run by.
Supreme Court disagrees with you. Public school teachers are govt. representatives. The football coach can't have a prayer in the huddle because he's a govt. representative. No nativity scenes on city hall property either. Nor Ten Commandments in a court room.
http://dailycaller.com/2014/02/19/washington-high-school-censors-pro-life-group-promotes-gay-groups/ In a letter to school officials on behalf of the Wilson Students for Life, public interest law firm the Thomas More Society laid out some of the contradictions and asserted that the group’s rights have been violated. Last fall the group tried to post two messages. The first read: “Since Roe v. Wade 1/3 of our generation has been aborted” with an image of a milk carton with a baby on it. The second poster quoted Ronald Reagan, reading, “I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion is already born.” According to the letter, the WSFL was told their posters would violate the Wilson High School’s poster policy: Acceptable posters do not offend staff or students, put others down if they have a different belief or opinion, or otherwise cause disruption. Posters that promote meetings, service projects, events, are the most common at school. And while the WSFL was denied that ability to post their messages, other groups, including the Wilson Gay Straight Alliance, were allowed to hang flyers promoting gay rights with math equations showing different types of relationships equaling love (or a heart) and the caption “Love Knows no Limits.” Further, while the WSFL were barred from conducting activities like holding a day of silence, holding a candlelight vigil the GSA has been allowed to hold a day of silence.
More from that article: “The Tacoma School District allows all Associated Student Body (ASB) recognized student groups to submit posters for display at its schools consistent with ASB and school rules and the First Amendment of the US Constitution, as it has been interpreted to apply in the public school setting,” he wrote in an email. “Consistent with the rulings of the US Supreme Court, our schools are not required to allow student groups to engage in expressive activities that: (1) constitute true threats; (2) are or could cause a material and substantial disruption of the educational environment or impinge on the rights of others; (3) are vulgar, lewd, obscene or plainly offensive; or (4) promote the use of illegal drugs. Our schools are also allowed to control the style and content of student speech in school-sponsored expressive activities, so long as such actions are reasonably related to legitimate pedagogical concerns. Any ASB recognized student group at Wilson High School can submit posters for display consistent with the above.”
The feds threaten to withhold funding if schools do not follow policy, so in a way they are definitely run by the government. Also, I would like to point out that public schools are a service provided by government funding. It's a fundamental right of all children to attend public schools in their area (even if they are in the country illegally it seems.)
Well, parents can homeschool or put their kids in private school. My point is that public education is made available for all kids by the government.
Odd. I went to this fox news page, which linked to the same story you linked to. Arriving from the fox news page, the link works fine.
While Republicans made an issue over the IRS auditing more conservative groups than liberal groups (because there ARE more), did the mass media violate their free speech responsibility by covering up this Bush scandal for many years? http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2014/03/16/221349/justice-department-settles-lawsuit.html
