LeBron James was understandably impressed by the 10-year, $292 million contract signed by Miguel Cabrera with the Detroit Tigers.

James will earn $19 million this season with the Miami Heat, tied with Chris Bosh for the ninth-highest salary in the NBA.

"I said 'wow,' " James said. "I wish we (the NBA) didn't have a salary cap."

James would undoubtedly make at least three times his salary if there wasn't a salary cap, as playing below his actual value helps support the NBA's middle class of players.

"He's the best player in baseball, and the best players in each sport should be rewarded," James said. "It'd be nice to sign a 10-year deal worth $300 million."

James hasn't decided if he'll opt out of his contract yet, but he did say he would if he could sign that type of deal.

"I would do it this summer for sure," James said with a smile. "I'd opt out for that."

Jordan Made 33 MM in one year. Lebron certainly is not worth 50 IMHO...

LeBron has to win it all this year to be worth it. Getting to the Finals and getting stuffed isn't worth 30 million. A guaranteed championship for the team buying LeBron's mercenary services? Yes, that's worth 30 million.

There was an artical on ESPN.com awhile ago talking about how much a player in the NBA would get in a non salary capped NBA and it had Lebron at 70mill and I believe Durant was at 60mill.

If there were no salary cap and I were Paul Allen, I'd pay LeBron whatever he wrote down on a piece of paper. (Well, up to 80-100Mil)

If I were a multi billionaire and there was no cap, the only way I wouldn't top 100 million per year would be if nobody else could afford it. I might have to make it incentive driven after 50 mil though.

No salary cap would be stupid. Lakers would have cp3, Kobe, Durrant, LeBron, Howard, melo, curry, griffin, and love

Even they wouldn't be able to afford that. Gotta make money somehow and if your paying each one of those guys at least 30m your not making money

I think their tv deal alone is like 200mil? They'd have plenty and it would be the Yankees of basketball. The only point of watching the sport would be to cheer for the few times they collapse and someone beats them.

also, revamping extension rules would allow teams to lock up players before they hit free agency

What if every team had one roster spot that was exempt from salary rules and didn't count towards the salary cap? That could be interesting. I only like the idea because Paul Allen owns the Blazers, but otherwise I don't think it'd be good for the sport.
GMs would have to be really smart about who they sign to those contracts. There could be a whole lot of guys who become untradeable either because they're not worth their salary (think Rashard Lewis, Gilbert Arenas, etc) or because other teams already have their exempt position filled. It could also cause a lot of bitterness between players who think they deserve to be exempt and their management.

That would be an interesting idea. One player uncapped with a hard cap on the rest of the roster. Unfortunately I doubt this gets approved since only the few elite players benefit and the voting majority get less.

That's an interesting idea. Maybe for teams that are rebuilding/tanking the exempt contract can be used as a sort of Franchise Tag for a year contract too.
