Gardner leading off. Ellsbry, McCann and Johnson out and Ichiro playing. Don't tell me Ellsbury hurt already.

Jill do you have the complete line up for tonight?

As far as Ellsbury I'm sure Joe is just being careful not wanting him to play a night game after.........well.......after a night game.

So, the Yankees invest in 2 guys for a total of $218M+, and they are being benched after 2 games because a LH is pitching? Was this explained when their deals were announced that they would not be playing against LH pitchers? If these guys aren't qualified to face Brett Oberholtzer, how did they get paid so much? Unless this is RJ, Carlton, or Koufax - I do not see this being necessary at this time.

    ...the genius of Girardi.

...Girardi for one, realizes that Elsbury and McCann are not going to play every game. And if you're going to sit them every now and then anyway, you might as well do it vs LH pitching instead vs RHed pitching.

Well, he's got Ichiro in there against a LH, and he's 1-1 with a run scored, so hot damn - carry on Joe!

...Ichiro is better vs LHers than RHers...and he's playing because Beltran is DHing.

Okay, I'm just looking out, I thought you were being sarcastic when you said "The genius of Girardi". I think he did the right thing in sitting those other guys tonight. There's just no way they were going to have any success against a 9 game seasoned veteran like Oberhowser, Oberhumper, Ophanhymer. Something like that.

There are some serious leadership skills inherent in guys like Torre, Girardi and Mattingly to manage the egos that their payrolls bring. Make no mistake about it, if you have ever had to manage a team of the best of the best, it takes serious mgmt skills.

...^^^ once again we agree... managing rosters full of larger than life egos can't be an easy assignment.

...fwiw, the 3 replacements (Cervelli, Ichiro, and Solarte) went 5 for 11 and scored all 4 runs...the rest of the line up went 2 for 22.

Since Cervelli went 0-4 with 3 strike outs you can't include him into a contributing replacement. What you can say is Ichiro & Solarte went 5-7 while the rest of the line up went 2-26

...didn't mean that Cervelli contributed and I included him because he was a replacement. Yeah, 5-7 is better than 5-11 and I started to word it the way you did, but if I had, surely I would have been asked "why didn't you include Cervelli".
..in the OP, Jill pointed to the 3 players that were given a rest, so I thought it only fair to include all 3 replacements.

Nice thread....memories of Koufax, Ford, Carlton, or Marichal, Gibson, Hunter,........

Ichiro on base 4 of 4 times? Scored GW-Run. I wouldn’t know why not a HOFer-2,744 MLB Hits in 14 years, + 1,278 more in Japan: 4.022 total. Got my Vote 4 HOF.

The Capt, finally gets a hit.!! Holy Cow, Hold the Pickle’s on my sammich.

In other arena's... Dunn-(still playing)-a 2 HR day off Hughes. Glad Phil is not using 'grasshoppers' in the Land O Lakes. Glad the washout has been paved over, with Mr. Splitty, Splasty, Nasty Splitter, can't wait for tonights game.

Others dressed for Winter!!! Abreu kid looks good-off to the-ROY Race?

No Bums games, other than Radio. Ok, then I’ll listen to Vin Scully (in days to come, when No Yankee games are on here in the damned Mojave desert.

I think we all know they will not be playing 162 games, but to sit them down after just 2 games? And if they are gonna sit them against a LH - this is the guy who is deemed "too tough"? Maybe sit them against Price, Lester - but this guy? Makes no sense.
