For those who don't know, CHL is a concealed handgun license. Anyone here have one? I should receive mine in two to three weeks, although I don't plan on carrying often. Mostly I just want to be able put a gun in my bag when I go hiking, although I did get a nice IWC holster for my .40. And, it's just kind of a neat thing to get. It requires an FBI background check and fingerprinting by the county sheriffs, along with $65 and a certificate that I took a two hour class on the subject. For those who have a CHL, do you carry often, what do you carry, any thoughts on the subject or pieces of advise?
I have one. I carry very seldom. I don't really like worrying about it. I carry a Glock 19. Make sure you get a holster that's comfortable and easy to conceal. It's a pain in the ass when it's really obvious that you're carrying a gun. Also, make sure you practice a ton with the weapon you chose. You want to make sure you're comfortable and proficient with it before you take it out. I actually have a cert from the NRA to teach the CHL class so I can answer any other questions you might have.
but...but..but...you're liberal! btw, when I first read the subject, I thought it was going to be about the Canadian Hockey League.
I have a license as well. I used to carry a .357 (that shit had some kick) but now I'm carrying a Glock 17.
Yes, I'm trying to do all the responsible things that aren't required since carrying shouldn't be taken lightly. I've been practicing at a range with my carry gun and holster. Also, I bought snap caps (fake bullets) to practice safely with at home. My gun is a kahr cw40, built to carry, so slim that in my iwc it's totally stealth in my normal clothing. Also bought an ankle holster but the gun prints that way. I got a car gun safe I case I ever need to leave it in my vehicle. I doubt I'll carry often, but it's nice to have the option.
I think you can open carry here too, although certain counties require different things like the gun can't be loaded. But I don't want to open carry. I don't want to scare people or let criminals know who is and isn't packing. Right now 1 in 16 adults in Oregon is licensed to carry concealed. But I never see any firearm bulges. Most people who have a chl either don't carry, carry in their bag, or take great care to remain totally concealed.
I have one as well... I do not carry.....yet. Probably carry a Springfield XD Compact, or MP Shield, or Glock19. Depending on which one I like best.
Who needs a CHL . . . I'll just recite the constitution and tell law enforcement they can't make me have a CHL
I haven't shot any springfields, but I like how they look and people seem to love them. I shot an MP shield and a bunch of glocks, at some point I want to pick up a Glock 23. But the glocks seem a tad bigger for carry, although it's a common carry gun. The MP is more svelte if you are only buying it to carry, I'd go that route.
The Shield is nice. It's super slim. Much easier to conceal. I love my G19. can't really go wrong with either.
Yeah, my Aunt's an LEO for Tualatin, she carry's the Shield off-duty, says she loves it. I need to hook up with her soon and go shoot it vs the Glock or XD. I think the range in Tualatin (threat dynamics) might have rentals there, have to re-check their site.
If you are looking at any of those three, check out the cdnn catalog http://www.cdnnsports.com/media/wysiwyg/catalog/CDNN2014-1.pdf You would have to buy it through an FFL but the prices would still be better than just about any gun shop, especially if you are interested in getting something like a high quality trade in. My friend got a trade in glock via cdnn in excellent condition, it looked brand new and worked perfectly.
Exactly. 2nd amendment guarantees your right to bear arms any way you see fit. CHL is an illegal con game.
But, If I am not mistaken, from what I understand, I think there are some city ordinances in Oregon that say you can't open carry. So a CHL is the next best thing.
If they don't have rentals, you could call the Clackamas county range. I know they do. The only complaint I would have about the shield is that it is slimmer, so it doesn't fit in my hand as well as the Glock.
