As great as Mo was, I'd also have to go with Jeter.

Jeter has been a favorite of mine since he came up, ditto Mo when he pitched in that '95 playoff game against Seattle. Each man made valuable contributions toward their game but Jeter would get the nod for position play. We are fortunate to see them both.

...yes, a part time pitcher is more important than a full time position player.

Its actually closer between Jete and Mo than most seem to think. Sure Mo was a part time player, but there are what 700 games over his career in which he he secured victory. That's a significant impact even when compared to an everyday HOF SS. But at the end of the day, Jeter was the captain, heart and soul of this ballclub...one which even Mo was happy to follow.

...IMO, "saves" are perhaps the most over-rated stat in the game.

I have been saying the same thing for MANY years. Especially when you come in with a 3 run lead, give up a walk, 3 hits, 2 runs & yet get credited with a save. Yeah that makes sense, get rewarded for almost blowing the damn game.

...don't get me wrong, I loved Mo, and was in awe of his ability to get batters out with essentially one pitch. But if people want to point to him being so instrumental in some of the Yanx' WS titles, they also need to admit Mo was also just as instrumental if not responsible for the WS failures of 2001, and 2004. For that matter, you can also add the the 1997 ALCS.

...doesn't make your argument compelling at all...terrible actually. What does any of what you said have to do with the "save" stats?

where does my comment say it HAD anything to do with the save stat.
it was mentioned that save was an overrated stat. and it was mentioned about the failures of Mo in the playoffs...it is very quick to dismiss a closers role isn't it...ask the Braves about the closers role, think they would have loved having Mo at the back end of the game with Maddux Glavine and Smoltz...What about the Baltimore O's think they would rather have Mo than Benetiz?

...uhhh, gee, I dunno, maybe it had something to do with you quoting rick's comment?...if not, why did you quote him at all?

...and why are you bringing up other teams?...you just cannot stay on topic, can you?

...I'd be interested to hear your thinking as to why you think the closer's role is so important...I'll wait.
