    Are they going to continue these ridiculous announced attendances?

    It really is pathetic. I mean don't they realize that people are watching these games & can see the LARGE open spaces in the stands? Last nights crowd was announced at over 42,000. Obviously bullshit. IMO I'd say 25 to 30 TOPS!

    These clowns are going strickly on tickets sold & not on the actual amount of people that go through the turnstiles. Why people or corporations by tickets & don't show up is another story. At least give them away to under privileged kids or something. Why waste them. I never understood that.

    ...you need to consider that unlike the old YS, there are MANY more places other than the seats they purchased for fans to congregate and watch the game, eat, drink, etc.
    ...not saying attendance is not down, but many of the empty seats are technically not empty..

    I get what you're saying Ron but they're still going on tickets sold as opposed to actual attendance in the park when they give there #.

    ...rick, as far as I know all teams do it that way and have been for several years now...most other sports do too.

    Yeah I suppose, its just kind of deceiving when you're looking at the final numbers

    ...it's not done to deceive anyone. Pretty sure it has something to do with revenue sharing.

    ^^^paid attendance, not physical attendance. And you can't dictate what people do with their purchased tickets, that's their property. Now you can say to the teams and stadiums, you have x in purchased tix, give those away to local charities, etc. I also like the idea of ownership, coaches and players buying tix and giving them to their favorite charities, foundations, etc. These are nice gestures, but you can't make them do it.

    I have always respected the Padres for giving blocks of tix to marine and navy units in mass. They have also given tickets away in advance for charity raffles and auctions. That stuff happens all the time, but it isn't well publicized by design.

    59 is also absolutely right, many if these new stadiums can be fully sold out and packed to the rafters, yet look sparsely attended because there are so many places within the structure to view the game. This isn't old YS were you clung to your seat in the upper deck for fear of falling out, nor is today's game attendees watching every pitch live, carefully keeping score in their program.

    Exactly. Baseball is a business first, game second.

    ...yup. This pretty much explains it;

    "The Mets announced that the attendance at their game Thursday night against the Phillies was 20,010. Even a casual glance at the game on television, though, suggested that there were no more than a few thousand fans at Citi Field. Were the Mets fibbing?

    Technically, no, because teams in Major League Baseball and other sports leagues report the number of tickets sold, not the number of tickets used. The bulk of the unused tickets were held by fans with season-ticket plans, including partial season-ticket holders who as part of their package had to accept tickets to midweek games held at the beginning and end of the season when school is in session and the weather is chillier.

    Teams know how many fans attend their games on a given night, a process made easier by bar codes scanned at the turnstiles. But teams, the Mets included, rarely disclose those figures, which they consider proprietary.

    Estimating the number of fans attending a game is not easy. At any given time, some fans are shopping for merchandise, taking a bathroom break or waiting in line for food at concession stands. Because the concourse on the field level at Citi Field is accessible to everyone, some fans buy tickets for seats in the upper deck but never go there, and instead hang around the field level. Some fans in suites, clubs and restaurants are out of view.

    Until 1999, National League clubs reported attendance based on turnstile counts and the American League teams reported paid attendance. In 2000, all clubs started reporting the number of tickets sold because those figures were used to calculate revenue sharing between the clubs, according to Major League Baseball."

    My main point here is when you look at the boxscore in any newspaper its listed the attendance at the bottom. For instance last night it listed the Yankee attendance at 42,821 and if if you account for the fans being elsewhere in the stadium I'm sure it didn't even come close to the attendance listed. And I believe those are the numbers they tally up during the year to figure out there yearly attendance. That's all I'm saying. They'd be better off not announcing the attendance. So it wouldn't have people like me thinking..."42,000? lets see there's only about 20,000 sitting in the stands where the fuck are the other 22,000 fans hiding?"
