I'm against it. Puerto Rico is something like 5 times poorer than the poorest US state. its also a predominatly Spanish speaking area, and we have enough issues with Spanish-English in the states as it is.

I don't know. I'm sure they don't want to be a part of the US, but it might give them some influence, at least.
well for the most part they are an independent country, except the fed government does occasionally tell them what to do. personally I think PR benefits a lot from its status, its got a de facto state of independence but at the same time it doesn't have to worry about building much of a military because its protected by the US military. plus with it being a US territory its citzens can pretty much come to the US anytime they want, and US citizens can go there.

Okay, sure, they might be poor without us as well. They probably be poor without us as well. But it's one thing to have a country be poor and another to have a country be poor because we take advantage of them and don't give them fair wages and so on.

No, because then we will have an odd number of states and we would need to add a star on the flag...that'd be no fun.

The only reason we dont give Puerto Rico their independence is because we're cutting down their rain forest and using their plants for pharmacies and pharmasudicles. Its really kinda shady by us to do that.
Nah. I just see no need for it. Let's get things in better order before adding more responsiblity to the USA.
I say no because Puerto Rico is basically their own culture, and like someone else said it would make 51 states (odd number) and cutting down the rain forest isn't something we should support.

I already posted in here, but I guess some admin found my post to be very offensive. Whatever...Anyway, I agree with your post. The US already has trouble supporting the 50 states alone. Why add another headache?</span>
I?ve been to Puerto Rico several times. It is a very very cool place, good food, cool people ? and SMOKING HOT CHICKS. It?s an absolutely beautiful island. I personally don?t care if they become a state, but most of the Puerto Ricans I know do not want to become a state. As far as how poor they are, I was really surprised how modern San Juan is. Granted San Juan is a big city and a tourist trap. The rest of the island didn?t seem any poorer to me than what I?ve seen in many rural areas of many states already in the union. I mean have you ever been to Mississippi or West Virginia?
San Juan is a resort town, so like you said its a nice place. but there are areas that the tourist don't go, and those places are horrible. I've been to PR, and I've been to Tooele county, which is one of the poorest areas in the US, and Tooele looked like living in the Vatican in comparison.
