What's the most heartwarming off-the-court moment involving a player you've ever witnessed? Most courageous? Most dumbfounding?
Is it too late? Because I thought of a good one yesterday... Of all the Blazers playoff games you have seen, if there was just one play you could have a "redo" on, what would it be? (This could be a good topic for an S2 forum thread! I can think of three I'd like redos on)
Do you mean a redo of his call on the play, or a redo on the team's play? Because if it's the latter, there's really only one answer.
How does it feel to have a restaurant named after you? Have you tried everything on the menu? Favorite? What one item of your wife's cooking do you think should be added to the menu?
With the first 1971 pick, Cleveland surprised the league and drafted Austin Carr over Sidney Wicks, who fell to the Blazers at #2. A film in the late 70s, "Fast Break," reported that the Blazers owner had paid the Cavs owner to not draft Wicks. What is your recollection?
Redo on team's play. Only one? I can think of 3 (indvidual plays, not quarters, not games). 1) Danny Young's 3 to tie Game 4 and Series in 1990 Finals, half a second too late 2) Terry Porter's jumper to win Game 6 of WCF in 1991 (could also say in that game the 4 on 1 fastbreak where Cliffy dropped ball and Kersey's desperate effort to tip in Terry's miss) 3) Game 6, WCF, 2000, Portland blows lead, Lakers up 6 final seconds, Sheed hits a 3, Lakers fail to score, Sheed tries a 3 to tie that JUST missed
What was more heartbreaking? Walton breaking his foot in the 77-78 season? Or the Blazers losing to the Lakers in the 91 WCF? We were clearly the best team in the league in each of those seasons.
Just got back from interviewing Mr Schonely. Wow, what a truly warm, friendly and great man! The interview almost lasted a hour. Because it's so long I'm going to release in 3 parts. Thanks to all of you for your questions.
Every encounter I've had with him, he has been nothing but gracious. Our last conversation was at the Lake Grove Albertsons and while I slobbered like a fool, he couldn't have been more patient. His parting words to me I still remember, perhaps because he has such a deep and resonant voice: "Young man, it was a pleasure." (And no porn jokes; this is the Schonz you're talking about!)
