I'm curious as to why you think this. CJ can't even get off of the bench these days, and is behind Barton in the rotation.
Sure they will, but I don't let facts get in the way of a good armchair GM plan. Front-load the contract, convince Toronto to S&T--whatever it takes Neil! Make it happen or you're dead to me! (That's how it's supposed to work, right?)
Why isn't it realistic to offer our full MLE on someone? It's less than 8 mil BTW (unless front loaded? which might be helpful for us as we'll need to offer dame a new K) Would love to add a cheap vet like Vince Carter, but I think we have to go far in the playoffs this year in order for us to become a destination of choice. Part of the idea with Vasquez is he makes the game easier for Dame and Aldridge, doesn't disrupt the flow of offense/etc. So there is a benefit there. Also, I think Robinson would be WAY more effective with Vasquez. He's also contributed to a playoff team, shown versatility in playing out of position much of the year, and greatly improved his jump shot. He'll get full MLE IMO.
Thanks a lot, Buzz Killington. I want to believe that we can get him for less! But you're probably right, and I'd probably want to do it anyway. Give him a Wes-Matthews-style paid-half-up-front contract, and bring him in to be the 6th man for the next 4 years. If TDot is willing to let him go, that is...
Well then we set our price and either get him or go to plan B. Worth a shot right? They may not be willing to break bank with how much they'll need to pay Lowry to stay, and how much they're paying derozan and eventually will pay terrance ross.
The Matthews contract worked because the Jazz were cash poor. When Portland tried the same thing with Millsap, I believe the Jazz took out a line of credit for the early cash payment.
The problem is you tie up your cap space for up to 3 days if he signs a contract with Portland. If Toronto matches, that's three days missed for getting a free agent.
The Millsap situation came first, right? Just trying to recollect. I think the overall price to Millsap was something the Jazz were far more comfortable taking on debt to match than the Blazers' offer for Wes (who was coming off his rookie year). But yeah, I hate tying up money for something that likely won't work out.
Even bigger is that with the moratorium, nothing becomes official until what 10-15 days into July? So, if Portland comes to an agreement with a player on July 1, they can't sign the offer sheet until the end of the moratorium. So, they basically tie up their money for the 10-15 days, PLUS, the 3 days. One would assume they pretty much stop negotiating with a player once they've essentially agreed to the offer sheet. So, we'd really be blowing our wad and any other potential moves to sign a player to an offer sheet that may never materialize.
I should've been more clear. I know the MLE is 5.56 mil or something I'm saying all those players mentioned will get either that or contracts up to 8 mil per season. Would like Vince as well, heck I would like a lot of players on Dallas.
A few reasons actually. First, he was the tenth overall pick in the draft last summer. Second, he was considered by many to be one of the leaders for ROY before he was injured. Third, GM's realize that he missed all of training camp and didn't play until December. They also realize he's a rookie trying to get minutes on a team that was vying for top four in the west. I get that some of you guys have given up on CJ, but I still think he has a lot of value. I think he's going to be a good player, but I don't know if we have time to wait for him to develop. We need veterans to go with our young guys. It's players like Mo and Wright and Earl that have made all the difference in this playoff series. I mentioned Earl because the players have been saying that he's been extremely vocal despite not playing.
I guess I'm not really sure what you want me to say. I think he has more value than Barton. Do you think his value is really low after the season he had?
Looking forward to seeing what Neil does this offseason after watching what the Spurs have done to us. He's without a doubt taking notes & I have faith he'll continue to make moves to improve our roster.
The bench production has been atrocious. Mo had his moments but overall he was a big liability in both series. I think we have something is Barton. I see a bit of Nick Young in his game. CJ never got into a rhythm with his injury that really should've held him out all year. I had hope for Leonard coming into the NBA considering the coaching turmoil at Illinois but he doesn't have a feel for the game at all.
Mo was a good pickup in spurts, Wright has hardly been used this season, TRob has played well in spurts, Lopez was a good pickup. He also drafted Meyers Leonard, one of the worst draft picks in Blazers history and CJ McCollum, who has been worthless. I'd give him a C+. He's hardly San Antonio or even Houston's GM. See what he does in the next two years.
The one single question I have to ask in regard to Stotts. You see what the Spurs are, how they play, how good they are. Can Terry put THIS together? Because I think he is going to have to if they are ever going to win another title. The next question. Is the current collection of players going to cut it. The LA's, Nic's. I think Damian is fine. I'm concerned about comitting a max to LA.
