I was looking at the draft year and I know you all know this but 2003 is just brutal. Look at these names. That is why Anaheim are so good. What a great draft for them. I understand that first 5 picks is usually good but having a great scout is worth more than the picks themselves. Just wow!

    12 NY Rangers Hugh Jessiman
    13 Los Angeles Dustin Brown
    14 Chicago Brent Seabrook
    17 New Jersey Zach Parise
    19 Anaheim Ryan Getzlaf
    23 Vancouver Ryan Kesler
    24 Philadelphia Mike Richards
    28 Anaheim Corey Perry
    45 Boston Patrice Bergeron
    49 Nashville Shea Weber
    50 NY Rangers Ivan Baranka
    62 St. Louis David Backes

Basically, a team can build itself through one strong draft year. Some years are crappy with nobody good, but some years are so strong. Who was our scout in 2003? I hope he got fired. Through first two rounds we could have gotten a franchise D and F. That is just sick!

every time someone.....and I've been guilty....brings up this draft, I literally
cringe. Whoever had Sather's ear to persuade him to draft a bust and bypass
some truly great hockey players.....had to be fired. It was this draft that
I began to dislike Sather. But that's another story.

On the plus side, we were in the ECF two seasons ago, we made the 2nd round last season, and we have a 1-0 lead in the 2nd round this season.

So we have had some fun the past few seasons with 4 playoff rounds won, and maybe more to come this season...we'll see.

No matter how many times the 2003 draft is brought up it's not going to change. Every organization has bad draft picks, while Hugh Jessiman is among the worst considering who was taken after him...it is what is was. A bad pick. And everyone knows Ivan Baranka didn't pan out because of the coaching staff...............
Side note, pretty sure that was the same year the Flyers drafted Jeff Carter in the first round...pretty strong draft for them as well.

"Damn, we just won a game 7 against a huge rival and took game 1 of the semis against the number 1 seed on the road, I need to think of something to complain about. Crap crap crap uhh....Oh I know, the 2003 draft! Old reliable! I can bitch about that for days!"

I took a few days off from this board because the whining in here after game 6 was absolutely unbelievable. How fitting the first post at the top of the list was this one.

I just don't get it Prod...I truly don't. Some of these fans can never be happy with this team. This is a hard working deep team. Maybe we will not win a cup, but we are one of the top 5 or 6 teams in the NHL IMO. Enjoy that.

Let's see if we can get by Pitt and make the ECF for the 2nd time in 3 seasons. Let's focus on good stuff, not the mother f'ing draft from 11 years ago.

If we get past Pitt all we'll hear about is how we lost a bottom 4 first round pick. I can see it now. The same people who complain how this team can't draft well, which has been true at times, will then complain that losing a bottom 4 first round pick is the end of the world.

I like where this team is at, I like that there is a very young core of guys here along with talents like St. Louis and Nash. I like that we'll have cap to play with next year. A lot to like right now.

I agree 100% Prod. And BTW...we did okay with Staal, Hank, sigining undrafted Girardi, Kreider so we do have some draft success as well.

We are moving in a good direction, and if we lose the 27th or 28th pick because we made the ECF, live with it. Not like it's a top 5 or 10 pick.

We are setup nicely for a good few year run now the next 2 or 3 seasons, assuming we finish this team off smartly this summer. Let's enjoy that.

And in the now, we have had an ECF, a 2nd round, and at least a 2nd round showings the past 3 seasons.

Chuck, prod...lets take a look at what these guys have done with their teams, since 2003.

13 Los Angeles Dustin Brown - Stanley cup winner
14 Chicago Brent Seabrook - two time stanley cup winner
17 New Jersey Zach Parise - stanley cup final appearance
19 Anaheim Ryan Getzlaf - stanley cup winner
23 Vancouver Ryan Kesler - stanley cup final appearance
24 Philadelphia Mike Richards - stanley cup winner
28 Anaheim Corey Perry - stanley cup winner
45 Boston Patrice Bergeron - stanley cup winner and stanley cup finals appearance

We have a whopping one ECF appearance, since 2003. They blew it big time. It will always be brought up by the fans.

Let's not take a look at it....find something else to complain about....how did they draft in 2000? And also in 2008...that's gotta be relevant to what is going on right now....right? Something tells me the 2003 draft will only be brought up by a *select few fans...most of the fan base has accepted that draft for what it was and moved on

Like has been posted on here as well, every single winner also had a lottery pick within the previous 5 years before they won.

But lets keep focusing on 2003, not on what's ahead.

Wheres the list of all the goalies taken before Hank in the 2000 draft? We just dont count it because it means the organization did something right?

What is the point Step? My lord some of you guys will never be happy. IT WAS 11 YEARS AGO...MOVE ON. Of course it was bad, but it was 11 years ago, should we discuss it every singe year and live in the past?

We have a 1-0 lead in the 2nd round at the moment, let's focus on that and trying to make a 2nd ECF in 3 seasons, not a draft 11 YEARS AGO.

Hilarious thread given where this team is. Yeah lets talk about the worst pick this franchise has made in 20 years when we have an opp to go 2-0 on the road vs Pitt

    Wow

i didnt even know this was a bitching thread, i thought the topic creater just wanted to point out how deep that draft was...... thats what i took from it.... sometimes its how you look at things, not everybody is bitching all the time, in fact the only bitching i can remember is about the refs in a game thread which is every game thread.......

of course then rangers lose there people who say so so should play better soso should play better but thats just fans talking..... sometimes its overboard but it is what it is
