Another # in monument park, http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/sto...new-york-yankees-retire-joe-torre-no-6-summer
...what a waste. I liked Torre, but damn, Monument Park should be for the "GREATS", not for the "pretty good". ...fwiw, I don't think Reggie's # should have been retired either...and I'm kinda iffy on Maris, Rizzuto, and Guidry too, for that matter.
Torre 12 years, 6 AL pennants & 4 world series I'm okay with BUT......I DEFINITELY agree on Reggie. I mean seriously 5 years & only 3 of them were good. And I agree that Maris & Guidry should also not be there. Rizzuto I'm also okay because of his 60+ years with the organization & what 50 years as a broadcaster? which IMO is the reason he's out there. One other guy I loved growing up but I question his place also in monument park is Elston Howard. I know he was the 1st black Yankee player but if that's the reason he's really out there then I don't agree. And if you read the article the Yankees are also going to be honoring (with plaques) Tino Martinez, Goose Gossage & Paul O'Neill. And they go on to say that Bernie will be recognized in 2015. Whether that means a plaque or a retired number I don't have a clue. But yeah, I agree it should be for the great ones ONLY! How do feel about Posada & Pettitte?
Do you agree with JUST the plaques for Gossage, O'Neill, Martinez, & Williams? And how about just plaques for Posada & Pettitte? My take, no on retiring #s for ANY of the above but I'm okay with plaques for Posada, Pettitte. Williams & O'neill. No on Gossage & Martinez.
...nah, I'm just not real keen on giving out plaques and/or retiring #s so easy...just me. Posada, maybe.
Torre inherited Showalters Team, had good cadre personnel. Old GI expression, an ah shit can erase all the atta boys in the world. That 01 Series loos was some what of an ah shit but '04 sealed the deal. Doing nothing about the midge attack on Jobba in'07 was not an "A": Grade either. If the Yankees retire his number well we don't make the rules. Does anyone know what hat Torre plans for the HOF?
I'd be shocked if it weren't the Yankees. I mean can you imagine him going in wearing a Braves cap & then a few weeks later being honored by the Yankees? Besides IMO although he was a pretty damn good player & I always enjoyed his game, he's going in as a manager, specifically a Yankee manager.
Look Torre won four titles as manager and went to six word series. Only behind McCarthy in wins. The guy deserves it.
I quit wearing Yankee "Gear" a long time ago but had I ever bought a Jersey with a number it would have been Paul O'Neils. The '78 Yankees were my favorite and O'Neil would have fit right in. I liked his hustle and play style, I remember knowing that if Jeter did not come through O'Neil would or Vice Versa. I've seen all Yankee Right Fielder from Bauer forward and O'Neil would stiil be my all time pick. Do I think his number should be retired perhaps not, if the Yankees wish to give out "plaques for "outstanding service they should be placed in another location.
...most of us could have coached those teams...fill out the line up card...fall asleep on the bench...and bring Mo in for the 9th.
Having the number retired should be for the absolute GREATS, yes, but the monument in Monument park is a little different... I think Torre should have his number retired... Imagine what he could've done back in the years when Stengel, McCarthy, or even Huggins managed... and conversely, do you think either of those three would honestly have had the success now like they did back then... Torre managed in a very different era... Among those who should DEFINITELY NOT have been retired IMO: -Reggie -Guidry I'm torn on: -Rizzuto -Maris As far as having the monument in monument park, I'm fine with all of these guys having monuments except for maybe Reggie and Guidry... and that includes the coming monuments for Tino, Paul O'Neill, and Goose... (Bernie coming next year btw)
The only plaque you'll get will be on your teeth. (An icon would go here if I knew how to use the fucking things.)
