The Dolphins weren’t teasing when they used five of their 30 out-of-town visits on wide receivers.

Miami used its second round draft pick on LSU’s Jarvis Landry, trading down 13 spots for the 63rd overall pick.

The Dolphins then traded up and took offensive tackle Billy Turner with the 67th overall pick in the 3rd round.

Landry was not one of the five receivers who visited Miami although the Dolphins did bring in his teammate, receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who was drafted 12th overall to the New York Giants.

GM Dennis Hickey said he talked to players who faced LSU and they had a ton of respect for Landry. You have to wonder if the Dolphins brought in Beckham just to ask him about Landry.

Landry was projected as a late 2nd rounder or early 3rd rounder and the Dolphins got him in that range.

The Palm Beach Post first reported several weeks ago that the Dolphins might make a surprising move by taking a receiver in the second round. While it isn’t seemingly an area of need for Miami, it could eventually mean the end for receiver Brian Hartline.

Although Hartline has been a consistent player with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, releasing Hartline after this season would save Miami $4 million. The Dolphins could also consider releasing Mike Wallace after the season but they’d still have to pay $9 million of his $12 million salary in 2015.

And since Landry is more of a possession receiver than a speedster, it would make more sense to keep Wallace.

The Dolphins also have slot receiver Brandon Gibson under contract, and we’re told the Dolphins continue to like him as the team’s No. 3 guy.

While Wallace and Hartline will be on the roster in 2014, the Dolphins likely won’t keep both Armon Binns and Rishard Matthews. Last year Miami only had four receivers on the active roster so there’s a chance both Binns and Matthews could be pushed out.

Landry had 77 receptions for 1,193 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

Hickey said Landry can play outside or in the slot. He had a disappointing time in the 40-yard dash at the combine, finishing in 4.77 seconds. But he also had a hamstring issue (which he says is fine now). Hickey said he had a better time at his Pro Day and that he “plays fast.”
