"While the success of any evaluation process hinges largely upon the competency of the personnel who conduct the reviews there is currently one in place intended to hold the officials accountable. It's just not done in the public arena."

"The only time we get a sense of an official’s punishment for failing to meet the basic standards of their job – not dramatically affecting the game with a blown call, for example – is when they’re left out of the postseason rotation. And then it’s just a guessing game as to why.

The officials are coddled by the NHL. They don’t have to speak to their actions after games. They’re not made available for interviews in-season, by and large. When the hammer comes down on them for screwing up, we’re not privy to it."

Well thank you for this, i couldnt find anything myself. That said, Very small fines and left off the playoff roster(which is still just a monetary punishment) is weak across the board.

It needs to be in the public forum. People should be able to see someone held accountable and whom is at the top of this pyramid that has the morals and ethics to properly conduct such an assessment of others. This is just a slap on the wrist its only really fines and no postseason. With the extremely unlikely hood they would be terminated unless for blatant disregard for their profession.

Why must you always play devils advocate Al Torts?

Officials in all sports are "dealt with" in private. There is no real public accountability. I think there should be. And to Lundy's point, just not advancing them to playoff games isn't enough. A large % of officials in sports never get advanced anyway. So how is that a punishment really? It isn't. And we don't know about it either, and we should.

Chuck, I think the way the nhl should do it is they find officials at fault and hard not to last night they make a simple announcement that official so and so will not be working for the rest of the playoffs. Fines and or games suspended are not relevant to us and do not need to be made public.

I have watched that play many times as I'm sure most of you have. And either I need to watch it again and again or some of you do. 1st of all, most of us agree that it was a really weak penalty. But the aftermath was completely 100% caused by the linesman. Carc was watching the fight. He wasn't skating towards it to be the 3rd man in. He simply turned around to watch. He did absolutely nothing wrong until the Linesman shoved him up against the boards. It was completely uncalled for. The linesman should be the one suspended for 20 games not Carc. If someone puts their hands on you and it is completely unexpected what are you going to do. You are going to defend yourself. Now take that up several notches to being a professional athlete and an alledged non bias official puts their hands on you when you're just standing there. What are you going to do. You are going to do exactly what Carc did. He tried to knock the hands of the linesman off of him. When the linesman would let go, that's when Carc got agitated and pushed back. I would have done the same exact thing and so would any other professional athlete. We don't need Carc because Brass will be back but Carc did nothing wrong. NOTHING!!!

A complete joke of a suspension. The official deserves a suspension if anything. His contact with Carcillo was not appropriate. All Carcillo did was push him away. Elbowed the official by ass. He used his arm to push him away.

Messiah, Caricillo should have been in the penalty box, he was being escorted to the box...history says that he would go instigate additional bullshit so the official escorted him to the box...Caricillo shouldn't be elbowing, slashing, or pushing an official away. 10 games is in the rule book apparently

Being it's the playoffs as well I thought the league could've used a little discretion, maybe 5 games, 10 is over the top i think. He wasn't malicious with anything, just a pushoff of the ref in the heat of battle.
