Abstract:
By most accounts, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) — the union representing the players in the NBA — conceded a significant amount of money and other contractual terms in the new ten-year collective bargaining agreement (2011 Agreement) that ended the 2011 NBA lockout. Player concessions were predictable because the NBA’s economic structure desperately needed an overhaul. The magnitude of such concessions, however, was startling. The substantial changes in the division of basketball-related income, contract lengths and amounts, salary cap provisions, and revenue sharing rendered the NBA lockout — and the resulting 2011 Agreement — a near-complete victory for the owners. Several interpretations have been offered to explain the lopsided deal, including the financial strain on players during the lockout and the players’ emotional reactions to the negotiations. These justifications are intriguing, particularly in light of the racial overtones that marked the entire process. These explanations have significant merit, but they fail to completely account for why the NBA players agreed to such drastically unfavorable terms. This article provides a fuller analysis of how this surprising result came about. In doing so, it takes an interdisciplinary approach using communications and industrial relations scholarship that highlights the critical importance of intra-union communications, public relations campaigns, and union democracy. Through this analysis, this article not only assesses the missteps of the NBPA during the NBA lockout, but also provides guidance to professional sports unions for future collective bargaining negotiations during periods of labor unrest.

The term "financial strain" and NBA players is a bit of a stretch though

Yea maybe, but the fact is it's beer money compared to what the owners are working with.

Exactly. When when the lowly Bucks sell for $550 million and the Clippers are rumored to sell for between 1-2 BILLION, it's tough to take the owners seriously when they cry about player contracts.

Good thread. No matter the result, and I obviously agree that the owners will come out better, I don't see any way that the current CBA stays as put when the 2017 opt-out clause comes into play. The players aren't going to get less money, and it will be hard for the owners to garner much sympathy in the public. A bunch of old white guys getting richer while keeping the mostly black players under compensated probably won't be the best PR move for the NBA in 3 years. Sterling not only changed the playing field for true franchise value, but he also changed it in how the PR battle will be played out in 2017. Sterling introduced race into the debate, and the NBPA would be foolish not to leverage it in their next round of negotiations.

If any nerd read the 73-page document, please register here.

In fact, if anyone even downloaded it and gave it a minute, please check in to get accoladed.

It's no coincidence that team values jumped after players didn't even fight.

Remember the owner-caused lockout (it wasn't a player-caused strike)?

Remember when the poor owners, who you guys said were almost all losing money and would eventually end the league if they didn't get their way, refused to start the season? Remember those threads speculating on what a new pro basketball league would look like?

About 2 Democrats on the board (including me) took the side of Labor. The rest of you, Republicans, were jealous of the players.

Now, every owner who sells his team makes out like a bandit. Billionaires line up to get the highest return on investment in the world...an NBA team.
