The Chromecast just got A LOT better because HBO GO is now compatible. I tried it out this morning and it seemed to work perfectly. Plus, with all the commercials on TV lately, I have a feeling more apps will be coming and/or the SDK will finally be official for developers to use. Other than making the SDK official, they need to make casting from Chrome smoother. From time to time, it seems to make the quality of my stream go down and occasionally drop the feed. It's annoying as hell, but still more convenient than plugging in my computer via HDMI or just watching on my laptop screen.
After 6 months, I'm still loving my Chromecast. I'm still mostly using it for HBOGO, Youtube, Netflix and Pandora. I try and watch NBCSports or some of the sketchier streaming sites via Chrome browser and that doesn't work all that well. It seems to make my stream choppy and then cuts out. I have an older wireless router, so I'm not sure if the issue is that it doesn't work well or if I just need a newer router. But, today is the day I've been waiting for. Google has officially released the SDK to developers. Any app can now take advantage of the Chromecast. I'm crossing my fingers for WatchESPN, NBCSports, any of the TV networks (especially CBS since they aren't on Hulu) and maybe Spotify. http://www.androidcentral.com/google-chromecast-sdk-released-developers
WatchESPN, Google+ and MLS Live all got Chromecast support today. I'm sure the timing for ESPN was to coincide with the World Cup. Not sure why it took so long for G+ to get the update, but this gives a real simple way to share photos on your TV. Hopefully the MLS and WatchESPN apps work better than the apps on my Roku. At times ESPN can be unwatchable. I think during the USMNT game last weekend I saw the same play 10 times because the feed kept jumping back to that point. By halftime I was 10 minutes behind.
You can still get ESPN3, but yeah for most of the stuff you need a cable subscription. But, if you have a 2nd TV, but no cable box it would work. Or, if you're traveling, it's a good app for watching on your tablet and now TV. Or you can use someone elses login, if they give you their info (would be a good option for kids going to college i would think). Same issue holds for HBOGO.
How are you liking the Chromecast? I know you picked one up a few months ago. Are you still using it?
My wife still gets pissed when our wifi router decides to throw a shit fit and drop internet connection. But she uses it almost as often as I do. It was a great investment! thank you so much for recommending it last year.
Nope. All streaming content from ESPN needs a cable subscription... at least with the providers they contract through. If not, you are SOL.
I get ESPN3 with just an internet subscription. I don't get the live streaming of the actual ESPN channels. Those require a TV subscription. Maybe Comcast is different.
