I think Olshey has done alright. He hasn't had easy selections or moves to make. I think this last team surprised he and PA with its record and 2nd round playoff berth. This offseason is when he should be judged more accurately. He has some assets finally to make trades with. He improved the bench. I think CJ will still be a player. Let's go!!
Well, don't we all hope that things we do turn out better than we had hoped? Olshey has made good moves. Getting a bit lucky is what often separates the good GMs from the great ones. I'm really hoping that Olshey makes more good moves this summer and that they turn out to better than hoped.
I'm quite sure that John Paxson thought he was making a great move trading LMA for Tyrus Thomas. The Blazers have improved dramatically under Olshey. How could he be considered anything other than a great hire at this point of this Portland era?
He's the best GM we've had in a long time. He might even be better than Whitsitt, but I guess we'll see.
The great Bob Whitsitt was Portland GM for 9 years and Seattle GM for about 8. Comparing 2-3 years of Olshey to a diamond like Bob Whitsitt is like comparing filé mignon to a leaky can with a sardine in it.
The great Bob Whitsitt won zero NBA titles and never got an NBA job after the Vulcans fired him for throwing the Rose Garden into bankruptcy.
When Papa is full of biting sarcasm, at least you know where he is. It's when he disappears to find new outrages that you have to start looking over your shoulder.
Yep, I agree completely. It's way too early to speculate how much better Olshey is than Whitsitt. Whitsitt's teams didn't win 50 games until his sixth season in Portland and didn't make it past the first round of the playoffs until his 5th season. Olshey accomplished both of those things is his second season as Portland's GM. Let's see what he can accomplish with 7 more years at the helm before we start comparing him to an overspending underachiever like Whitsitt. BNM
That was actually a Steve Patterson decision. Perhaps he didn't have a choice. I think every GM they have had and the moves that were made is/was more of a reflection of Paul Allen at the time. Paul deserves just as much credit for the organization losing as much money as they did as Bob. He's been through many different personality changes since the dawn of his ownership. And I think it's due more to Jody and Vulcan.
Whitsitt's insane level of spending without even making an NBA Finals played a large role in making the arena unprofitable. Patterson's poor drafting and general paranoia didn't help the situation, but he was hired as a hatchet man, as is evident after he fired dozens of employees within his first few weeks on the job.
Yeah, the deal for Robin Lopez was a steal when reflecting on it now. I wasn't expecting RoLo to do as well as he did for our team this season. I was pleasantly surprised with the work horse! He's now one of my favorite players on the team.
