Apparently he wasn't his own first choice. http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11035935/flip-saunders-return-coach-minnesota-timberwolves
I think it's hilarious. The guy couldn't win with Kevin Garnett, but he's going to win with Kevin Love?
That's going to be a fun locker room. Love's coach is also the guy who can trade him. Let the hilarity ensue!
I thought he "stepped down" to become coach...so they don't have a gm? that way he can never be fired!
Except he was a genius and waited to do so until the week before Robinson returned from injury, as well as most of the other starters.
Pat Riley did it with the Heat in 2005-06. They got off to a slow start (11-10), because Shaq was injured. And then the INSTANT Shaq came back, Riley forced out Stan Van Gundy and named himself head coach. Perfectly timed so he could get credit for saving the Heat's season and leading them to a championship. BNM
To be fair, Saunders did win with Garnett, well at least he won a shit load more than any Timberwolves coach before or after. He led the Timberwolves into the playoffs 8 straight years, the only playoff appearances in the history of that sorry franchise. He's also the only winning coach in franchise history. He led the Wolves to 411 wins with a .558 winning percentage. No other Timberwolves coach has won more than 97 games (Rick Adelman) and no other Timberwolves head coach has a winning percentage above .434 (Dwayne Casey). BNM
Ok, my respect for Flip just went up quite a bit. http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/1...berwolves-says-kevin-love-no-right-frustrated That's fucking awesome that he came out and said that.
Which begs the question: Who leaves first? Love or Saunders? THat is a train wreck waiting to happen and he won't be there for longer than a year.
Love will go first, then the Minny rebuilding project begins. I think Taylor will have Saunders around for 2 or 3 seasons during this process.
He said that and it helped KG stomach losing at the time. However, I remember KG telling Lebron to essentially not waste his youth in Cleveland and to win ASAP. I think he regretted not forcing himself out.
Yeah, if he's essentially taking potshots at him in the press, I think that marriage is ostensibly over.
