Phil 'THE BOMB' Hughes is making an about face from his travesty years as a New York Yankee. MLB is into the second week of June and Mr. Hughes is sporting a 7-2 record and he's not throwing gopher balls. So what gives? I, for one, wanted him out of a Yankee uniform. So, of course, he is.....uhhhhhm...on the comeback trail. What's the reason for this turnaround? HE IS OUT OF NEW YORK!
Expectations for the Twinkies are not as great as those for the Yankees so the little puke is more relaxed when he takes the mound. Still pi@@ed of at how the Yankees performed when they faced him.
On quick pitch this am they were comparing Hughes 2014 stats to those of Walter Johnson. The sun does shine on every dogs ass sometimes.
...Hughes 2014 has much less to do with park factors than it does with the fact that he's simply been a better pitcher. His OBP has dropped from .340 in 2013 to .277 in 2014...his WHIP has dropped from 1.45 to 1.10......his K/9 dropped from 2.6 to 0.9. ...besides, many of the HRs he gave up last year were tape measure shots and would have been out of most ball parks...Hughes ERA+ was 78 last year vs 127 this year.
comparing anyone but Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton, Bob Gibson, Juan Marichal, Sandy Koufax, hell, a few dozen other HOF or near HOF Pitchers,......IS BLASPHEMY.....!!! IMO.....!!! What a bunch of idiots.....whoever "they" are...?
Although I have only seen Phil pitch twice this year, it does look like he's learned he doesn't have to try and strike out every batter. While he's making his pitches, and utilizing his Team behind him to make those outs....a major mind set to turn a rookie, into a Vet. (I'm not claiming Hughes is a Vet either). I liked Phil when he was a big prospect of the Yanx in AA, all the way up to his first 3 years. Most of us, thought he was the next Ace of our Staff....("who started out so young and strong, only to surrender".) He had a very good 2010 season, when he started the year out 5-0. Wasn't that the year he took a line drive off of the knee (or do I have my years mixed up)? Seems to me he never was the same, after that incident, in NY, tho' he ended the 010 season 18-8. Just my 2 cents, (and that won't buy ya' a tootsie roll)...for what its worth....!!
Keep in mind Rob that also in 2010 he received (I believe) the highest run support in the league at over 7 runs per start.
