Geez, watching these actors/actresses/atheletes, et al., makes me feel even old(er). Just as I got over my therapy session on over anxiety of growing old too....J/K...!

I do appreciate these posts, especially your addition on some of our great Apache leaders. A great National Park, Ajo ie, Organ Pipe National Monument on the AZ/MX border, I used to often frequent. An old Apache Sacred Burial Ground exists up atop the Ajo MT. Range. That hike only 6,000 feet, amongst some of the heaviest groves of all cactus, tons of Snakes, Tarantula's, Scorpions, etc. and 130 degree heat, make the hike the most grueling hardest hike, I've ever experienced in my life.

It was well worth it tho'. That hike made Mt. Whitney, look like a stroll thru the park, too. The Chirachaua's are about 3 hours north of Ajo, and one gorgeous scenic wonder of a Natl. Park as well, ala Cochise. Can't blame the American Indian's for their demise or plights.

As well, as a kid, my Uncle was a bomb technician at Ft. Riley, KS. Custer's last home, which he departed from on his way to his own slaughter and Last Stand. Custer's home at Ft. Riley is a museum, or was then. As much his supposed last horse, (not the one he led into battle), his white Lipizzaner, was 100 years old and in good health as well, grazing in the Pasture surrounding Custer's last home. Incredible stuff and history, I couldn't get enough of as a kid.

The Cars of Stars Museum, (prior to being bought out, and sold), was at one time, in Buena Park, Ca. Bonnie and Clyde's old Ford, was in that museum. A true wonder they were ever even able to transport it without the entire thing falling into a heap of rubble. That car looked worse than Swiss Cheese.....!!!

Thanks Rick....BTW-the last thing I want, is to live to be 90, heck no way....! If one were in decent health maybe.

Great info Rob. I knew you'd enjoy a thread like this. I've always had the dream to just get up & go to all the sites where parts of our history happened. I've been to the Alamo twice, Once when I was in basic training at Lackland air force base & again about 30 years later for my daughters graduation from basic at the very same base,

I made the San Antonio trip myself, spent a summer and fall there with my Uncle who at the time was stationed at Fort Sam Houston. When I was a kid I'd cut grass with those rotary push mowers. My uncle had a power job and would let me use it on weekends. Back then I'd cut lawns for a dollar a shot making 5-7 bucks every Saturday big bucks for a 13 year old kid. I did go to the Alamo and in later years to the San Jacinto Grounds as well.

Man, that had to be BRUTAL mowing lawns in San Antone....had to mow my 10 acres with a Tractor in the South, and ONLY at Night...thank God it had good headlights.

I actually was dump enough, to once TRY and mow it with a push mower. Got about 2 strips across it, and went down with heat stroke...no shit...!

Hey' Michael is that the San Jacinto Grounds in TX., or CA....?

Have you ever been to Joshua Tree Natl. Park and Monument...? Looks out across to the San Jacinto's of Caly, and down on Palm Springs. A wonderland of the most amazing rock formations I've ever seen anywhere.

As stated I was 13 at the time and one vivid memory I had of cutting lawns in SA other than the heat was the God Damn Fire Ants. Not to push that everything is bigger in Texas thing but the Fire Ants there built some pretty high mounds and when run over by a mower they'd be pi@@ed. We have them here in Florida but their mounds are smaller and Amdro kicks their asses. Another thing I remember about San Antonio were the flash floods. Salado creek crossed the Wirzbach Highway near my uncles house and when the rains came the Creek has currents that would push a car upstream. Out of towners were the main victims. The San Jacinto Battlefield I went to are in what is now Harris County where the Texans won their final battle. When I was stationed at Fort Polk there was nothing exciting about De Ridder Louisiana so we'd bop over to Houston when we could check out the clubs, sites and hit the Astrodome. Houston like San Antone was hotter than hell with some helacious flash floods as well.

Fort Polk, you weren't to far from Lake Charles-(LCS). We lived in LCS from 98-2001. Of course its changed quit a bit, with the influx of the Casino's. Old Chenault AFB, closed, still used tho' to build the JSTARS, in the time I was there.

I had a kid, from my Little League Team, who was like our son, and came to Ft. Polk a few times, from the Army Base near Savannah, GA. I forget the name of the base.

At Ft. Polk, they'd air drop a Tank or two out in the swamps, then the guys, would have to spend days winching them out, a few feet at a time. Grueling hot humid, mud bogged hellacious work.

Those damn fire ants, in La, were horrid. To often I'd make the mistake of walking thru the pasture with no shoes on. Always wound up with blistered feet from those ants. Not huge, but damn were their bites venomous and quit painful.

The massive groves of mosquitoes in LCS, were unlike anything I've seen, even in Fla. They'd be so thick, around the outside lamps, we couldn't even see the lights most of the time.

Tho' the mosquitoes in rural swamp areas of FLA, reminded me of 747s landing on my arms/legs like runway strips. Mosquito repellent "OFF", seemed to attract them more than inhibit them from biting. Those damn things were the size of Dragon Flies, in Fla.

The mosquito fogger trucks still run in LCS like I recalled them as a kid in Shreveport.

Houston, Beaumont, LCS to Jacksonville, one hell of a place to live. I'm surprised the locals don't have gills...!
