Not basketball related, sorry for that. Tony was my friend. Today is one of the saddest days of my life. He was born almost the same day as me. He grew up here in San Diego. He married his high school sweetheart. He went to college here. He was drafted by the Padres and the San Diego clippers. He made his whole life here. He was absolutely one of the finest men I have ever known. He will be missed.
He was one of the best left handed hitters of all time. I always enjoyed watching him play whether his team was doing well or not. He is Mr. San Diego! Thanks for all the memories, Tony!
RIP, Tony. Twas genuinely a pleasure watching you play ball. You were one of the greats (both as a ballplayer and a human being).
Sorry to hear this, too. He always seemed like a class act. I read that his cancer started in a salivary gland. I assume that was from using chewing tobacco? Too bad, regardless. 54 is way too young.
Best hitter so far in my lifetime. That swing matched Jr's at the very least. Never heard a bad word about the guy either. That's saying something in this day and age. Lost one of the true greats on and off the field.
A Tip of The Cap to a Real American. Best placement hitter I ever saw. He could drop the ball onto a paper plate anywhere you placed it on the field.

Tony said he felt his cancer did result from tobacco chewing. So many years they said cancer/tobacco link was a myth. Tony was also a star point guard in college who got recruited to the baseball team. He later coached his son at the same school. If you believe in such things you can picture Bob Welch pitching to Tony Gwynn in the field of dreams. RIP.
I live in San Diego too. His impact here was pretty much like jordan in Chicago. He was one of my sports heroes growing up. Sad
I don't even follow baseball and I knew his name and that he was a very classy guy. Sorry for the loss.
