    Kerryon Johnson picks Auburn

ESPN 300 athlete Kerryon Johnson (Madison, Ala./Madison Academy) grew up a Florida State fan. His first offer came from the Seminoles more than a year ago, and he watched as fellow Alabama native Jameis Winston led them to a BCS national championship this past season.

But when it came time to make his college decision Tuesday, Johnson opted to stay in-state and gave his verbal commitment to Auburn, the runner-up in that BCS title game.

Tahj Jones shot by ex-LSU player

Former Louisiana State University linebacker Tahj Jones was injured after being shot by another former LSU football player, police said Saturday.

Sulphur Police Chief Lewis Coats said Jones, a Sulphur resident, was shot Friday night at an apartment complex by Brandon Winey, a former offensive tackle for LSU.

Jones, 24, went to the apartment complex to visit a woman and Winey arrived shortly after to visit the same woman. A fight ensued, and Winey pulled out a handgun and shot Jones in the abdomen, Coats said.

    Schedule strength is SEC priority

The SEC chose not to stray too far from tradition as it announced Sunday night that longstanding non-divisional rivalries would remain a fixture of the league's eight-game conference schedule.

However, in a twist focused on improving strength of schedule, the SEC will begin mandating that each program incorporate an annual nonconference game against a power conference team starting in 2016.

Historical rivalries such as Alabama-Tennessee and Auburn-Georgia survived the chopping block as the SEC voted to keep an eight-game conference schedule that will include six games against division opponents and two games against non-division opponents.

    Auburn legend David Langner dies

Former Auburn football player David Langner, who starred in one of the most memorable games in Iron Bowl history, has died. He was 62.

Auburn teammate Mac Lorendo said Langner died early Saturday morning after battling cancer.

Bill Newton blocked two punts in the final minutes of the 1972 game with previously unbeaten Alabama, and Langner returned both for touchdowns.

The Tigers won 17-16 in what became known as the "Punt Bama Punt" game.

Jim Donnan says he won't testify

Former University of Georgia football coach Jim Donnan, who's accused of operating a fraudulent investment scheme, told a judge Tuesday that he will not testify in his federal trial.

Closing arguments in the case are set for Wednesday and then the jury will begin deliberations. The prosecution called dozens of witnesses, many of them investors, over four and a half days and rested its case Tuesday. Defense attorneys called a handful of witnesses and told the judge they would have one more Wednesday morning.

A federal indictment against Donnan and Gregory Crabtree, of Proctorville, Ohio, says the pair ran the scheme from September 2007 to December 2010 through West Virginia-based GLC, which dealt in wholesale and closeout merchandise. Prosecutors say the company raised more than $80 million from 94 investors, and nearly $23 million was lost.

Vols QB Riley Ferguson not returning

Tennessee coach Butch Jones doesn't expect quarterback Riley Ferguson to return to the Volunteers.

"Riley's no longer with the program," Jones said Tuesday night during the Southeastern Conference spring meetings. Earlier Tuesday, Volquest.com had reported that Jones said he didn't expect Ferguson to remain with the Vols.

Ferguson, a redshirt freshman, had been expected to compete with senior Justin Worley and sophomores Joshua Dobbs and Nathan Peterman for the starting job. Although a leg injury prevented Ferguson from playing last season -- he was the only one of the four quarterbacks who didn't start at least one game -- he impressed coaches with his arm strength and upside.

    LSU's Jalen Mills arrested

LSU starting safety Jalen Mills was suspended indefinitely by the team after he was arrested early Wednesday on a second-degree battery charge for allegedly punching a woman in the mouth.

A probable cause document states that a woman says Mills punched her in the mouth on May 4 in his apartment. She says she fell to the ground and was briefly unconscious.

    DaMarkus Lodge commits to A&M

Texas A&M added to its impressive 2015 recruiting class when ESPN 300 wide receiver DaMarkus Lodge verbally committed to the school Thursday.

Lodge, the nation's No. 9 receiver, became the Aggies' 16th overall commit -- and ninth from the ESPN 300 -- in the 2015 class.

Lodge, No. 65 overall in the ESPN 300, chose Texas A&M over Clemson, Florida, USC, Baylor, LSU, Ole Miss and others.

"I've always wanted to be there. It's just that environment," Lodge said. "It's so laid back there, and they're really not on you too hard ... but when you make the wrong decisions, they will be. They're going to let you be a man and learn from your mistakes."

    Jonathon Mincy arrested for pot

Auburn cornerback Jonathon Mincy was arrested and charged with second-degree marijuana possession on Friday.

Mincy was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over in Abbeville, Alabama, for allegedly speeding prior to the arrest, according to a member of the Henry County Sheriff's Office, who was not authorized to provide any further details.

"It was a routine stop on 431 near Great Southern Wood in Abbeville of a car doing 92 in a 65," Henry County Sheriff William Maddox told The Dothan Eagle. "The officer went to the car and smelled marijuana. There were two males and two females in the car and one of the males had shake all over his shirt sitting in the car in the back and there was a bag of marijuana near him. That person happened to be Jonathon Mincy of the Auburn football team."

Clowney played hurt with S. Carolina

Houston Texans linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, who underwent surgery for a sports hernia two weeks ago that caused him to miss minicamp, played with the injury during his final season at South Carolina, according to a report.

Clowney had said earlier this month that the injury did not predate his time with Houston, but his agent told a different story to NFL.com during Thursday's NFL rookie symposium.

    Philip Lutzenkirchen dies in accident

Former Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen, a fan favorite who played on the 2010 national championship team, has died in a one-car crash in Georgia, state police said.

Authorities said Lutzenkirchen, 23, was ejected from a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe when it overturned several times near LaGrange early Sunday morning. He was a passenger in the vehicle.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn called Lutzenkirchen "a great player and competitor" and "a great teammate and friend off the field."

QB Maty Mauk had viral infection

Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk will enter fall camp a little lighter than expected.

The redshirt sophomore, who is listed on Missouri's official website at 200 pounds, said he lost "8 or 9 pounds" about a week ago and had to undergo treatment with the team's trainers. Coach Gary Pinkel said Mauk had a viral infection but that it wasn't too serious.

Denzel Nkemdiche back with Ole Miss

Ole Miss redshirt junior linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche has returned to the Rebels' football team following his spring suspension, coach Hugh Freeze said on the final day of SEC media days Thursday.

Freeze said that Nkemdiche, who has 117 career tackles in two seasons, will be allowed to fully go through fall practice, but is still suspended for the season opener against Boise State in this year's Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic in Atlanta.

"He's back with us now," said Freeze, who is entering his third season as Ole Miss' coach. Freeze suspended Nkemdiche in February after he was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.
